You Gave Your Word!

by Steve Countryman

John 1:1-5 "1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it."

This Word is Jesus! The scripture, the Word of God, is Jesus in written form. When you see the W capitalized in Word it is because it represents a person, name or title. In this case it represents Jesus. Matthew 24:35 "Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away." God's Word is important to Him for it is His Son. The words contained in His Word carry power and authority and are alive. Hebrews 4: 12 "For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart." God gave us His word to help, bless, encourage, enlighten, lead, guide, direct, correct, show, reveal, empower, love, redeem, deliver, heal, save, rescue, provide answers, stir questions and establish an everlasting relationship with Him.

God's word is good and God is good to His Word. God's word is true and God is true to His Word. Isaiah 46:11 "What I have said, that I will bring about; what I have planned, that I will do." Isaiah 55:11 "so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it" Jeremiah 1:12 The Lord said to me, "You have seen correctly, for I am watching to see that my word is fulfilled." People in the Bible would swear oaths by swearing them on someone greater than themselves. This was to give them and their word credibility. Hebrews 6:13 "When God made his promise to Abraham, since there was no one greater for him to swear by, he swore by himself" God gave us His word and has kept His word. His promises are "yes" and "amen". God gave His word as a promise to mankind and God gave His Word, Jesus, as that promise fulfilled to mankind.

Giving your word is something that you should never take lightly. "You are only as good as your word." Today's society has no problem with broken promises. It is for the most part expected. People will say things and promise to do things that are politically correct or acceptable without ever planning to follow through with them. "Let's do lunch soon." "I'll get back to you about that." "We need to get together and talk about it." " Why don't you call me and we'll set something up." "As soon as I can get a free moment I'll let you know." There are thousands more examples of these frivolous promises out there yet 99% of the time we don't mean them. Polite conversations but really just lies! A broken promise is a lie no ifs, ands or buts and we do it almost daily! So what do your words really mean and what worth do you give them? Are you ready to stand behind what you say even to your harm to keep your word?

Giving your word should mean something or your word will mean nothing. If you give your word, that becomes a verbal contract and is legal in the courts of Texas. So if you tell someone that you will do something for them or to show up at a specific time you should at all costs honor your word to fulfillment. If not contact them quickly and try to setup an alternate time or place to keep your promise. I am amazed that in this day and age with the inventions of cell phones that people will forget to call all together about a missed appointment. Even if they are running late they will not call. And it seems to affect all types of people and occupations. A repair man whose has set up a time to show up and repair some equipment doesn't show up on time. He is several hours late and hasn't even called to let you know. Some don't show up at all and don't bother to call. It is easy and it seems the right Christian thing to say to someone when they are hurting, "I'll pray for you", but will you? Make it a personal point that the next time those words come out of your mouth that you honor your words by making sure that you WILL pray for them some time soon! It doesn't matter if someone is around when you do it or not. It should be important to you to follow through with your word because it is important to God!

Keeping your word is not only the right Christian thing to do but is a what our God expects from us. We are made in His likeness and as such God values His word and expects us to value ours. When the rest of the world doesn't value their promises you, on the other hand, value and honor your promises so your life is reflecting God's character to them. "Mean what you say and say what you mean." It is you coming into alignment and agreement with God's Word and will. When you honor your word then you empower your word to fulfillment and that scares the Devil. It is a necessary thing that you honor your word so that God can honor His Word in you. Now your faith language carries the honor of your word with it and God's Word to back it!
