The Diamond of His Love

by Jerry Ousley

Diamonds are one thing I cannot afford. I haven't purchased many diamonds in my life simply because of the cost. Before Deb and I were married I bought a diamond engagement ring. It wasn't a large diamond but it was genuine. We had only been dating about three months and I was convinced in my heart that she was the one for me. I've never been one to procrastinate when it came to something I really wanted to do, so I bought it. As it turned out even though I was ready to commit to marriage she wasn't yet, so I carried that ring with me every time we had a date just in case. The day finally came and I was able to give it to her. Man was I glad because I was constantly checking my pocket to make sure it was still there. I didn't want to lose that thing!

Many years later she lost her wedding band. It was a complete accident. The only reason I probably never lost mine was because I had very small fingers when we first got married. Over the years I gained weight and consequently my fingers got bigger. The ring is stuck on I can't get it off. I guess that means that she'll just have to stay with me. Anyway, I bought her another wedding band, this time, one with a row of very small diamonds imbedded in it. That's the extent of my diamond purchases.

Diamonds, when polished and cut to make them appealing, are clear in nature. You can see the reflection of light from them but other than that you can see right through them. They are so hard that they are used as cutting tools. They cut glass but they are also used as tips on drill bits to easily cut through hardened metal. That always made me to wonder what they use to cut a diamond.

God's love is like that. The fourth stone of the five precious gems is the diamond of the love of God. Several times in the letters of John we are told that God is love. He is the ultimate definition of love. Love emanates from Him. The diamond is used to represent His love not because we give it to our spouse as a symbol of love but because it is clear and very hard.

The clearness of the diamond shows us that love is a hard thing to see. It's like the wind if you will. It blows but we cannot see it. We can only see the effects of it. Love is like that. We can't see love. Love is an emotion that comes from our hearts, but it is also an action word. When we love there are always results of that love. In 1 Corinthians 13 the King James Version of the Bible uses the word "charity." In most modern versions that has been changed to "love." Most people today don't like the word "charity" because it has come to represent a handout. Our pride often makes us look in disgust at a handout. The true definition of "charity" is "love in action." It is love that produces results. The clearness of a diamond and the wind are like that because though you can see right through them there are acts of love left behind.

Then the diamond's hardness is also representative of love. The diamond is a stone that cannot be destroyed easily. Though it can be broken into small pieces and scattered, it cannot be consumed. Every diamond ever discovered is still in existence today in one form or another. Even if shattered to a million pieces, each of those pieces is still around somewhere. God's love is like that. You cannot destroy it. It cannot be consumed. The results of His love are always around.

It's amazing to me how extensive the love of God is. He loves each and every creature of His creation; most of all he loves each of us, whether we love Him back or not. I was asked one day if God loved those who refused to believe in Him, or come to Him in repentance. I was young in the Lord then and didn't have a good answer. But now I know that God loves each person He has ever created. It's just that many simply don't love Him back. He detests the fact that those who refuse to accept the free gift of salvation will have to be eternally destroyed in hell. He doesn't want to send anyone there. In fact, in a way people send themselves there. The free gift of salvation that is just one of the results of God's love is available to all who will believe. If we refuse to believe then we have made the eternal decision, not God. So, will you choose to accept the engagement ring the diamond of God's love?
