Things God Hates

by Jennifer Champion
9/11/2014 / Christian Living

The bible is clear on 14 types of people or actions of people that God hates. They are found throughout the Book of Proverbs, written mostly by Solomon during the earlier part of his reign. The purpose of the Book of Proverbs was to teach people how to attain wisdom, do what is right and fair and to provide overall moral instructions on how to live life.

#1 Violent People and Their Ways

Do not envy the violent or choose any of their ways. (Proverbs 3:31 NIV)

We have all known a violent person or at least known of violent people in our lifetime. We may see how they live in seemingly perfect harmony with prosperity all around them. For example, we see pro athletes on television get arrested for beating their spouse but still get to play their sport and earn millions of dollars. Then there are the big businesses that make their fortune off products made by abused people in third world poverty stricken countries. What do we do when we are made aware of these things and types of people? We are to turn from them, pray for them, and choose not be a part of their success.

#2 through #8 The Detestable Ones

There are six things the Lord hates, seven that detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community. (Proverbs 6:16-19 NIV)

Haughty eyes are those of a proud and arrogant person. We all know snobby people that turn their noses up because they think they are somehow superior. We must remember that each of us came into this world the same way as a sinner with nothing but the grace of God if we choose to accept it.

A lying tongue does not know the difference between a small lie and a big lie. A lie is a lie in God's eyes. The bible does not tell us that God hates only big fat lies and doesn't really mind the little white ones. It is very clear that God doesn't like lying. The next time we find ourselves in a position where we can lie or tell the truth, the truth is always the way to go.

Hands that shed innocent blood goes back to the very first thing discussed above, a violent person. A person that would take the life intentionally of another that had nothing wrong is detestable. Think about people that murder children or the elderly. We must pray for these people that they will repent for what they have done and seek God's grace, mercy and forgiveness.

A heart that devises wicked schemes is like that of a couple going through a bitter divorce. We have all known that couple that will do anything to make their spouse look bad. They concoct malicious schemes to make that person's life miserable. We have worked with or read about business people that rip people off to make themselves rich. It happens every day around us so we must keep our eyes open for it.

Feet that are quick to rush into evil belong to people such as those looking to get into a fight at the drop of a hat. We have seen countless times and may even have done so ourselves, rush into doing something wrong to get out of trouble. For example, a woman that is destitute turning to prostitution to make a living or a man robbing a gas station because he is broke. We all know the bad boy in high school that was the bully and picked on others all the time. We must stop and think about our actions and seek God in everything so that we too do not put our feet into the fiery pits of evil too.

A false witness who pours out lies goes back to that lying tongue that was discussed previously. A person that purposely tells untrue things about another is a morally and ethically disturbed person. They exists though and their only mission in life to make another look bad. Usually it is so they can feel better about themselves. We always be truthful when we are in a position to speak of another person.

A person that stirs up conflict in the community is a person with a wicked scheme and most likely a lying tongue. We run out of fingers and toes to count the number of politicians that have deceived a community just to get into office. A person that causes uproars of an undue nature amongst members of a community are only after one thing and that is control. We must be mindful and research the facts on people when they rear their heads to obtain power in our communities and our country.

#9 Untrustworthy People

The Lord detests lying lips but he delights in people who are trustworthy. (Proverbs 12:22 NIV)

Along with that lying tongue mentioned earlier are lying lips and it all comes with a person that cannot be trusted. We all know someone that can't be trusted with anything and let us not forget the relationships that have been broken because one of the two cheated on the other. We talk half seriously about used car salesmen being slick but it is not just them. There are many untrustworthy people in the business world and all around us so let us beware.

#10 The Sacrifices of the Wicked

The Lord detests the sacrifice of the wicked, but the prayer of the upright pleases him. (Proverbs 15:8 NIV)

When someone has obtained their bounty in a scheming, untrustworthy way then it is not fit to be given to the Lord. God would much rather hear the prayers of the righteous than to receive the sacrifices from the wicked that took advantage of others for their gain. We must be on the lookout for these people that want to tithe large so their name will be on the new wing of the church or do grand global gestures for others with the funds they have earned through things like selling drugs, shady business practices, or human trafficking. It's not just about sacrifices with money but with their time. We must be watchful for predators that put in their time and have evil hearts and plans.

#11 Wicked Ways

The Lord detests the way of the wicked but he loves those who pursue righteousness. (Proverbs 15:9 NIV)

If we always pursue doing the right, just, and fair thing then we do not have to worry about making God angry. It is always better to do the correct thing and follow God's commands. People that do wrong and know it are often in trouble and find themselves in the middle of a crisis. When tempted with doing something that is wrong in God's eyes, even if it is fun and easy, back away from it and ask if God would be pleased.

#12 Wicked Thoughts

The Lord detests the thoughts of the wicked, but gracious words are pure in his sight. (Proverbs 15:26 NIV)

Curse words are so unflattering for a person. They are disrespectful and full of wickedness. It is always better to speak respectfully to others and to treat them how you would want to be treated. Here's the clincher though; even if we never speak the horrible things going on in our mind, God still hears them. He knows our every thought even if no one else does. Those that hide behind computer screens to look at porn or fantasize about doing mean things to bring harm to another aren't free from God because he knows each and every one of our hearts.

#13 Being Proud

The Lord detests all the proud at heart. Be sure of this: They will not go unpunished. (Proverbs 16:5 NIV)

Being proud is all about thinking we know best and not seeking God in anything. We believe that we are able to do it all on our own without his help and guidance. When we get this way, we tend to look down on others and their ideas and we become selfish and arrogant. We possess those haughty eyes mentioned earlier. Pride is a struggle for many of us and one in which we must each work on constantly because until we discard it from ourselves, we can never be the person God means for us to be.

#14 - Being Unjust

Acquitting the guilty and condemning the innocent- the Lord detests them both. (Proverbs 17:15 NIV)

How often have we seen people get away with murder? It occurs every day that people get off free of punishment even though the evidence was stacked against them. We see the wealthy go unpunished for crimes because they can pay their way out of it yet hear more often that someone was finally released from death row after spending many years behind bars for a crime they did not commit. We must make sure any time we are summoned for jury, to be honest and look at all the evidence. We must make sure in any dealings where we are given the opportunity to judge another that we do not let the pressures of others sway our better judgment.

Finally, we must all remember that God ultimately is the final judge and jury. He is a God of love and he has laid out the things he does not like or want us to become. It is up to us to use the free will he gave us to make good moral decisions and always think of God and others first. If we do this, we can't go wrong.
