WITNESS WHILE YOU WORK
by Jeffrey Hagan
10/09/2014 / Christian Living
Colossians 3:22-25, "Bondservants, obey in everything those who are your earthly masters, not by way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord. Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. For the wrongdoer will be paid back for the wrong he has done, and there is no partiality" (ESV).
Introduction:
God created work for the benefit of humanity. A handful of reasons He created work are: to give us a sense of self-worth, or dignity; to teach us responsibility; and to give our lives here on earth a feeling of accomplishment. However, let me ask you a question. What difference does your Christianity make at your place of work? Are your co-workers able to tell that there is something unique about you? In the passage above, Paul points out four characteristics of those who live out their Christian example while at work.
1. Submission (v.22). Being respectful and obedient to your supervisors at work is a way to show "reverence" to God, and those He has placed above us.
2. Diligence (v.23). It's very easy to become negative, to get angry, to get bored, and to even get depressed, when you view your job as working for "man." But, if you try to keep it in perspective that ultimately you work for the Lord, then you will attempt to be more grateful and diligent.
3. Excellence (v.24). Our ultimate reward is not our paycheck, it is the reward the Lord will give us for eternity. He knows our needs better than we do. So, do what you do with excellence.
4. Honesty (v.25). If you keep in mind that your true and ultimate boss is God, then you will be much more aware of times you may be tempted to be dishonest. When you cheat at work, stealing time, resources, supplies, etc., you are cheating God as well as man.
Conclusion:
As believers, our ultimate "employer" is Jesus Christ. We need to view each work day as working for Him will all of our heart and ability. And, while doing so, keep in mind that our ultimate and final reward will come from Him and it lasts for eternity.
