The Peace of God

by Jerry Ousley
1/16/2015 / Christian Living

Ah peace the one thing it seems that the entire world is looking for! Over the centuries men have thought to have discovered it, if only all the people would just see it their way. But they don't and so in the name of peace wars are fought, people killed, and the innocent slain. What is thought to have been conflict to usher peace at last into the world has in reality only left behind yet another trail of anger, sorrow, and weeping.

Often I have spoken words that I thought would bring peace. Instead they were misinterpreted, misunderstood, and misapplied to the point that instead of bringing what I just knew would be a peaceful response brought instead a raging storm of anger.

Here is another spiritual trait that will help us have the right attitude to be successful Christians. We've talked about humility, unselfishness, service, cheerfulness, teamwork, thanksgiving, rejoicing, fear and trembling, and now the peace of God. These things, when approached the way Jesus taught us, will help us to have a good, positive, Christian attitude.

Many years ago I tried to make peace with a company I was dealing with. At the time I was attempting to make a living selling post frame metal buildings. Finding a supplier for materials had proven to be a challenge. A local lumber company had come to my rescue, or so I thought. I had obtained pricing from them, figured my cost and then added my profit, had come up with what I thought to be a successful deal for all three parties: The lumber yard, my contractor-customer, and myself. After delivering the materials and collecting the money, a big problem cropped up. I had specifically asked for a large insulated overhead door in the material list, but the lumber yard had figured in a regular overhead door not insulated. The cost difference was huge. The lumber yard shaved off as much as they could, and offered it for cost. It was agreed that I would pay half and the contractor would pay half. After the door was ordered and delivered, I went in and paid my half. But the contractor never paid his half. To make a long story short, the owner's wife, who took care of the books, insisted that I had to pay the rest of the cost of that door. I had proof that my obligation had been paid but she disagreed so conflict broke out. After months of deliberation I finally met with the owner of the business, who was a great guy by the way, and we came to an agreement that the balance of the door could be shared equally between us. I was getting ready to write the check when his wife came in. He told her the deal we had made and she insisted, "No, he owes us for it and he's going to pay it!" What was about to end in peace was torn apart by this woman and I remember leaving with words something like, "When you can get your wife under control let me know and I'll pay my half of our agreement!" and stormed out. I don't believe I ever paid that money and they never asked for it again.

It is very difficult to have peace between people. We all have our opinions and often they conflict. The only real peace to be found in the world is with God. Philippians 4:7 talks about the peace of God and describes it as a "peace that passes all understanding." We think we understand what peace is. But the peace of God is one that exists even when war, trouble and conflict are raging. During the worst of storms the peace of God sits in the midst like the calm eye of a hurricane. Men, by their sinful nature, cannot possibly understand it. We think that the only way we can have peace is when all is calm, bright, and quiet. But the peace that God gives us cannot be naturally understood. It is a spiritual peace, one that comes not from outward circumstances, but originates and emanates from the presence of the Holy Spirit within us.

When we can learn to let the peace that goes beyond all human understanding grow, blossom and bloom no matter what is going on around us, then we have found true peace; a peace this present age can never comprehend. It is peace with God.
