The Puppy Abortion Clinic

by Jennifer Champion
1/19/2015 / Short Stories

Late last summer on a drive from Nashville to Daphne, I happened to pass by an abortion clinic. I parked across the street to let it sink in that inside that building babies were being murdered. The building itself was pristine. It was white with tan shutters and landscaped on two sides with colorful flowers of every sort. It had a welcome sign to the right of the sidewalk leading up to the entry door. It's parking lot was small but adequate. Overall, it appeared to be a charming little doctor's office small town America.

I pondered how someone could make a decision to kill an unborn child. I remembered my wife telling me after we had been dating for a year that she had once aborted a baby when she was seventeen. She said the decision haunted her everyday because when she had walked through the doors of the clinic all those years ago, she didn't think she was far enough along in her pregnancy and it wouldn't matter. However, just after the abortion, the doctor showed her the tiny mangled body and told her, "It was a girl." It was at that moment she knew she had just murdered her own child.

Next to the abortion clinic was an empty building for rent. I dialed the number and told the person on the other end I wanted to rent it for a short term and asked if I could get the key the next day. Then, I called my wife to say I'd be several days late coming home. Then, I drove through town and found a sign maker and had him make me a large sign to hang outside my newly rented building. The sign read, "The Puppy Abortion Clinic." I hung my sign and the day it was in the news. There, on the front page was an article that a place had opened to "kill puppies." I was dubbed the "Puppy Killer." Two days later as I sat in my car and watched people picket the unoccupied building they thought was an abortion clinic for puppies, I was amazed. Herds of people showed up from every walk of life, some with their dogs, to picket my fake clinic yet no one even looked at the real abortion clinic right next door.

I decided to join the circus and walked up to the chaos. I started talking to a woman who was there with her dog. She appeared to be the leader of this group so I suggested to her that we picket the building next door also since it too was an abortion clinic. She looked at me and said, "I am pro-choice. Why would I do that?"

All I could do was laugh. Then, I went to the side of the building and got my ladder and brought it around front. I set it up by the front door and climbed its rungs. I sat on the top rung and looked at everyone. Clearly I had their attention.

I shouted, "If you believe that a clinic where people can bring their pregnant dogs in to have their puppies aborted is wrong, let me see a fist pump!"

I continued, "If you believe this is murder, let me see a fist pump!"

I really had them riled up now. Then, I got off my ladder and walked through the crowd to the sidewalk and with the real abortion clinic to my back, I shouted, " If you believe that a clinic where people can come to have their own babies aborted is wrong, let me see a fist pump!"

They were stumped. I received one fist pump from a little woman in the back row. So, I walked through the stunned and clueless crowd and got back on my ladder. I took the sign down and flipped it over and hung it back up. It read, "Coming Soon, New Hope Church."

I am happy to say the abortion clinic next door closed its doors after five years of New Hope opening hers. God is good!
