Indifference

How we start our day is important in that it can shape how we expect the rest of the day to unfold. Many of us begin by turning on our favorite TV news channel to bring us up to date with the outside world. This can be a sobering experience even if we limit it to local news only. It seems endless, the list of shootings, robberies, fires, accidents and other tragedies unfolding in our own cities and neighborhoods. We see governments confused and uncertain in how to deal with the challenges that confront them. We see businesses callously intent on the bottom line and slashing jobs, wages and benefits needed by ordinary people who are beginning to give up hope of having a better life. We send our children off to schools that need urgent repairs and better management. Funding for these projects go to schools in wealthier neighborhoods first. Funding is not increased because, after all, we are responsible leaders and, when elected, promised not to raise taxes. Right!
It is a discouraging outlook isn't it?
Some of us are just tired of hearing about the world's problems and so we have closed our ears and hearts.
Some of us buy into the media hype that things are just fine and the poor need to go out and get one of those new jobs they heard about. Then there is the callous voice that says, "If I can do it so can you. You really do not want to work".
How about, "Hey fella, grab those boot straps and get to work. If I can do it, anybody can who is willing to work". (The Ayn Rand philosophy). To the Ayn Rand admirers I would say, "Have you ever read The Book of John, verses 16 and 17?" Verse 16: "If you love me, take care of my sheep". Verse 17: "If you love me, feed my sheep".
As I thought about it, I began to realize that the real problem is the indifference of some of us who call upon the name of Jesus. The secular world out there cannot solve the complex problems it faces. It does not have the wisdom and knowledge needed. I say that with the confidence that only Jesus and His true followers, empowered by the Holy Spirit, can deal with the issues of today.
Our Lord does not see callous indifference as a part of any true believers philosophy. It is not an option.
If we can agree on that, we will realize that each one of us plays a vital role by sensing our Lord in whatever way He leads each one of us. If the secular world cannot save itself, it falls upon each one of us to take up our cross and follow Jesus as the Holy Spirit enables us. If we would quiet the din of the secular world around us, turn off the phones, TV and other devices, and quietly listen to our inner spirit, we will find the guidance to discern that special path God has planned for us to travel. That plan will be unique, enabling us to use the special talents God has given us.
One pitfall we must be aware of is inwardly judging our fellow believers who are not traveling the same path as us. Ours is not the only path God uses. Each one of us is unique in his walk with our Lord.

Although our walk with our Lord is unique, we must remember that we are a member of the Body of Christ, the church. We need to be sensitive to His voice during our daily walk. The world out there is physically and spiritually suffering and desperately looking for answers to a way out. It is not able to heal itself.
You may be thinking I am already involved in a ministry --- I do not think I can handle anymore --- and you may be correct. Some may think that God may be calling them to a new ministry, and they may be correct. How about God calling them to add a new ministry to what they are already doing.
All this can be very confusing. How can we tell which is the correct direction to go? The answer is to go to the One who created you and knows you better than you do. One who loves you and has planned a life of service designed to bless you and others on your journey. Pray during your quiet time and God is faithful. He will not desert you but will lead you, in His timing, to fulfill His plans for you.
You may choose the path of indifference. All the cares of this world are just choking out any sensitivity to the plight of others. You have worked hard, your career is flourishing and life is good. After all, if you do not take care of yourself, who will? If that is your choice, you may find, later in life, that it is all chrome and plastic, promise without fulfillment. You may begin to feel that emptiness inside indicating the decay of the soul. It does not have to be that way. God loves you and is faithful. If you ask and are sincere, He will come to you, forgive you of your selfishness and heal your soul.
Choices, we all make them every day. Whether we are sad, discouraged, depressed or just plain tired, our Lord stands ready to step into our lives and bring us the healing we so desperately need.
We might consider some of the following suggestions as we quietly enter into His Holy Presence.
1 - Lord, I realize there is a feeling of emptiness in my life. All the chrome and plastic of the secular life has proven to be just that, chrome and plastic. The feelings of excitement and pleasure that once filled my days have faded leaving me to ask, "Is that all there is". I turn to you and listen as you answer me.
2 - Examine my heart. Look into the hidden areas that are sensitive to the light of your presence.
3 - I am prepared to turn from my selfish, indifferent ways as you lovingly guide me into the new wonderful life that you have prepared for me since you created me.
Are you ready to make what will be one of the most important choices you will ever make?
Make it now while it is still possible! Tonight you can enjoy the inner peace that our Lord longs to bring you. He is waiting for your decision.

As a senior citizen, I am dedicated to serving the Lord through sharing my experiences and insights with other believers. My primary focus is upon being an disciple of Jesus and, in being one, I can help others to find their spiritual way also.
