Always Pray

by Jerry Ousley
5/08/2015 / Christian Living

Have you ever told someone that you'd be praying with them about something and then just forgot about it? Unfortunately it happens a lot in the Church. It seems to have almost become a by-phrase among Christians. It's really easy to say, "I'll pray with you about it," then go off and leave it.

I've done it. More often than not it was purely by accident and I'm sure that's the case with most Christians. We really mean well when we say it but then we allow our minds to become occupied with other things in our busy schedules and we just forget.

I remember an incident in which I did this very thing. A believer asked me to pray with her about a very serious situation. It was heavy on her mind and was very important to her. I told her I'd be praying with her and I meant it. I felt compassion for her in the situation and knew God could and would help her. But then, after our conversation, something demanded my attention and it completely left my mind. A few days later I was speaking to this Christian lady again and she thanked me for my prayers saying that it had really made a difference. I sheepishly told her that she was welcome but we should give God the glory; I just couldn't own up to the fact that I had nothing to do with it at all! I had forgotten to pray! The Holy Spirit gave me one of those hard, nearly-knock-you-off-your-feet punches and I had to eat some more crow that day (I've done a lot of that) and confess to her that I had forgotten to pray. She seemed to understand but in reality I had let her down. There went those feet again right into my mouth! You know, I've got the cleanest toes in town!

But it did teach me a very valuable lesson. Now when someone asks me to pray with them I do two things; first I either pray with them on the spot, or else make certain that as soon as our conversation is over, I pray right then, and secondly, I maintain a pray list that I pray over every day. I put their request on it so I won't forget. We all should have our own habit of making sure we don't forget to pray with people because it's very important!

To be a successful Christian we must pay the price. Another part of paying that price is to always pray. I've often quoted the three word scripture found in 1 Thessalonians 5:17, "Pray without ceasing." It means that we are never to stop praying. We are to persevere in prayer until the answer comes, whatever it may be, and we are to always be praying. I believe that our every thought should be directed at God. Let me explain; as we think, in a way we are talking to someone mostly our self. But those thoughts can be to the Lord and that's praying.

We seem to have a mind-set that prayer has to be done in a certain physical stance; kneeling with our hands neatly folded, heads bowed, and eyes closed. That's fine if it puts you in the attitude of prayer. We also think we've got to say certain words. So often when people pray they change their language to that of the sixteenth century and fill their words with "thee's" and "thou's." That's okay too if it helps you to communicate with God.
