When God Says Enough

by Dr. Henderson Ward
5/20/2015 / Christian Living

It is not often that humans become useless.

In the natural world nature has a way of incorporating that which seems to be pointless, worthless and stupid, (in a word useless), into performing a vital role, albeit an unknown role to the ignorant, as if to justify its existence.

History has taught us many lessons in this regard.

For example, there was a time when the medical profession regarded the appendix as totally useless, a relic from a bygone age, and every time an internal surgical operation was carried out the appendix was surgically removed. However modern medical research and development has shown that the appendix performs a useful function as a repose of good bacteria in the event of illnesses flushing those bacteria from the rest of the intestines.

So the appendix is not useless after all.

(By the way it was Charles Darwin who said that the appendix was from the human ancestor, the ape, when the appendix was required to allow the apes to digest leaves. LOL.)

Although exceptional, it is nevertheless true that humans can become useless. They can choose a path that is highly detrimental to humanity, hostile to nature and dishonourable to God. When this point is reach, either by a combination of these factors, or a haughty engagement in any one of them, then humans have forfeited God's protection and grace.

The skeptics may scoff but they tend to forget that every human being exists because of God's mercy, whether they know it or not. Had it not been for God's mercy we would have been consumed already, says Jeremiah (Lamentations 3:22).

It is a serious matter, and not to be taken lightly, that God reserves the right, and will in his own time, and in accordance with his own plans, cease to tolerate communities that have gone too far.

Truth be told, the community slated for destruction does not even know that God can unleash the hostile forces of providence at any time; because God's longsuffering and mercy have for so long been taken for granted.

God's longsuffering and mercy were withdrawn:
1. From the people in Noah's time; and they perished in the great flood. (Genesis 7:21)
2. From the inhabitants of Sodom and Gomorrah; and they were incinerated. (Genesis 19:24-24)
3. From the inhabitants of Herculaneum, Pompeii and Troy; and they were wiped out.

It was because of the spirit of licentiousness, the spirit of total depravity and the spirit of defiance to divine authority that those inhabitants perished.

Whenever God has withdrawn his protection and grace, and as a consequence the hostile forces of providence have struck with devastating finality, it was always because the dominant spirits prevailing were injurious to human beings, and blasphemous towards God.

Today the three dominant spirits in the world are no less destructive to humanity and dismissive of God. And should God act now to put a halt to such widespread folly, and intrenched evil, then it should not come as a surprise to believers.

God is greatly offended by the state of moral and spiritual decline that has set in, and in particular by:

1. The widespread spirit of greed

It is noticeable that as the world has developed, the spirit of greed has mushroomed out of all proportion.

You have rich and prosperous companies that refuse to pay its workers a living wage, but lavish great riches on the bosses so that they can buy expensive yachts, state of the art private airplanes, luxurious houses across the globe, countless expensive cars and similar toys, and live exorbitant lifestyles.

You have owners and controllers of great wealth who would not stoop to give a poor, hungry person so much as a loaf of bread, but would throw exotic parties costing hundreds of thousands of dollars for their friends, and throw in the garbage thousands of dollars of leftovers.

There are those who are obsessed with having more and more, and even when they have more than they can consume in several lifetimes they nevertheless will fight, and if necessary kill, so that they might have more.

And this greed, endemic in the ruling classes, migrate downwards to infect all sectors of society. Alas, even church folk are not exempt.

The Bible speaks eloquently about greed, and here are a few scriptures:

"Those greedy people brag about the things they want to get. They curse the LORD and show that they hate him." (Psalm 10:3 Easy-to-Read Version)

"Doing right sets honest people free, but people who can't be trusted are trapped by their greed." (Proverbs 11:6 Easy-to-Read Version)

"Then Jesus said to them, "Be careful and guard against all kinds of greed. People do not get life from the many things they own." (Luke 12:15 Easy-to-Read Version)

"Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness." (Ephesians 4:19 KJV)

2. The consuming spirit of indecency

All over the internet, all over television, and all across the newspapers you can't fail to come across a flood of indecency sweeping the world. It is awfully bad when the co-called paparazzi hound these so-called celebrities and take photos of them at unguarded moments. But now you have these so-called celebrities, and wannabe celebrities, taking these photos of themselves and publishing them in so-called "selfies" for all the world to see.

And what these so-called celebrities do, then the young and feckless, the ignorant and those lacking in self-worth copy with relish.

We have developed a mindless society, people whose minds are poisoned by a surfeit of crass nonsense and titillating garbage emanating from the developed world.

Long gone are the offence of offending public decency, or outraging public decency or indecent exposure laws and the like.

In place of these said laws we now have a wretched diet of continuous pornographic and soft pornographic images everywhere. Our youth is being pommelled from every side with this ceaseless tide of filth and it takes exceptionally good parenting to give them a measure of protection.

One of the reasons the Muslims are growing in numbers, and Christianity is declining, is because cowardly leaders in the church are failing to stand up and be counted in the fight against indecency and lewdness. Even women church members are attending church dressed as if they are going to a night club or some ragamuffin festival.

3. The debilitating spirit of cowardice

When we are obsessed with our own self, our prospects and interests, then standing up and combatting the evils of our time is not for us.

Courage is in short supply in the leadership, and in followers everywhere. And this is abundantly true for those in the church.

We are afraid what our friends might say, or our workmates, or our customers or clients.

We have become unreformed, groveling cowards.

We need our John the Baptists who could look the King in the face and say "No it's wrong you cannot have your brother's wife" (Mark 6:18), or the Nathans who could say to King David in confrontation, "Thou art the guilty man" (2 Samuel 12:7).

When our leaders, and believers everywhere, fail to stand up and boldly, unapologetically and vigorously defend the gospel and its teachings, then that which is morally and spiritually unacceptable takes hold, and become routine and corruption sets in. A little leaven, says the Bible, leavens the whole lump (Galatians 5:9)

The watchmen on the walls are asleep; but God isn't.

When the time is right, he who sees everything will surprise a lot of people. Believers need to be extra vigilant, and not be caught napping, for Almighty God is not afraid when he is ready, and at a time of his choosing, to say "Enough."

Enough said.
