Getting rid of God

Governments of the world have set the tone. They have legalised the expulsion of God from the corridors of government, educational institutions, public places and are now even attempting to dictate to churches what they should preach. And they have legalised the killing (through abortion) of children. In America alone 50 million abortions were performed over the last 30 years and that's only the documented cases. To put this into perspective, 50 million is more than the entire population of South Africa.

And so it is with individuals today. They are getting rid of God. They do so by ignoring what they have heard or seen concerning the reality of Jesus Christ, perhaps many times during the course of their lives, however short or long that may be. When the topic comes up in conversation (which really serves as a reminder to them) they cringe as they quickly change the subject or agree that they are not "quite" in right standing with God, but will attend to the matter at a later date. What they are really saying is that they want to continue doing what they are doing and can't have God's interference in their lives at the present time. And so they put God aside to pursue important plans for themselves that do not include God.

But while they pursue those important plans they also set up other gods in their lives during all the leisure time they set aside for themselves. God calls it idolatry. What is idolatry? Idolatry is the idolising of pursuits, pleasures, people, animals, food, things and objects that take up a lot of an individual's time and attention on a continual basis. In effect, they become the things that people worship in lieu of God.

For example, if a person religiously watches certain programmes on television to the point of irritation should anyone try to interrupt them during that time then they are worshipping one of the "things" of this world, of which Satan is the god. They are busy using their God-given life and time to commit idolatry. And what they absorb from those programmes will come out of them every time they get shaken by someone or something - because they are full of it and not filled with the things of God. The same applies to any of the other things mentioned in the previous paragraph that take up our "crazed" enjoyment, attention and time.

Now don't get me wrong, God is not a kill-joy. Of course God wants us to enjoy the life that He has given us on this planet, but not to the exclusion of His will for us, which is to seek and to consult Him concerning every detail of our lives. God has given us the spirit of power, love and a sound mind which we are to use to His glory while we have the Breath of Life that makes it all possible.

God gives a warning to all of us should we restrain and suppress His desire and will for us. "For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who hold the truth in unrighteousness; because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them." (Romans 1:18)

What does this mean? It means several things. To start, it means that God takes action during the course of our lives to correct us. It could mean the loss of everything we possess or a tragedy in order to get our attention for our own good, simply because He loves us and does not want us to perish, that is, spend eternity in hell.

Secondly, we know there is a God because His creation can be seen all around us. It is an inborn awareness within us plus the fact that all of us have heard the Gospel of Jesus Christ in verification thereof.

Furthermore, to "hold the truth in unrighteousness" means that we are deliberately and selfishly suppressing the truth, preferring to commit idolatry with the things of the world and placing God on the backburner.

The root of sin is selfishness, which sits atop a foundation called pride. "I will do what I want to do and nobody tells me what to do with my life" is the usual attitude that comes from someone who is captive to pride. Fortunately, God will gently pick up such a person after a hard fall, provided that person repents, transforms and renews their mind to the will of God.

Don't get rid of God as an interim measure in favour of an idolatrous lifestyle. It might just, unexpectedly, become a very hot, eternal condition from which there is no return. And don't try and get rid of people who bring these things to your attention. It might just be that God has sent them your way.
