His Own Cross

They took Jesus therefore, and He went out, bearing His own cross (John 19:1, NASB).


How appropriate that Jesus would personally carry His own cross to His own death.

I always imagined that He must have despised that piece of wood. I know I would have, but perhaps He didn't.

The cross would come to represent His great compassion and awesome victory.

It would become a symbol that would span the ages to come.

It would represent His kingdom.

It would become our banner.

From that day on, the form of ultimate defeat would become the image of everlasting victory.

Somehow, I think Jesus understood all this. Perhaps He didn't know all the pieces of jewelry, icons, and weapons that would reflect the image of the wood he was transporting, but He knew the significance of what he was doing. Though He may have despised the shame, the cross was a necessary tool. So He may have not only endured it, but embraced it.

I can picture the Great Champion staring at the cross, authority and passion welling up inside of Him, proclaiming, "You are mine! I will make of you what I will!" Then He picks it up and carries it, for His own purposes.

What Satan meant for evil, God turned into good. Perhaps this is why the cross has become the ultimate Christian symbol. Maybe our regard and affection for it is not manmade. Perhaps it comes from the very heart of God.
