God is Greater

Did you know that demons are real? There are various opinions as to where they came from and to be honest, the Bible is a bit unclear as to their origin. I don't have the time in a single article to explore all these theories and opinions so let's just leave it at that and acknowledge that they do exist.

I've had some encounters with demonic spirits. I'll never forget as a boy awaking in the middle of the night. At that time we lived in a meager two bedroom house. Our youngest brother was not yet born and my middle brother and sister and I all shared a single bedroom. Don't worry, it wasn't like most people think now a days. We never even thought about lewd things and honestly we two boys weren't fond of sharing our room with our sister. She slept on the bottom bunk bed and my brother and I slept on the top. I normally lay on the outside of the bed.

One night, as I said, I was wakened and I'm not certain as to why. My brother and sister were fast asleep. When I opened my eyes standing right beside the bed was a reddish-colored, very ugly creature. It stood a little higher than the bunk beds and was looking straight down at me. What can I say? I was terrified and afraid to move! I quickly shut my eyes hoping that I was only dreaming but folks, I wasn't. I opened my eyes only a sliver hoping that it would be gone but there it stood. I don't know why this thing was in our room, standing by our bed looking down at me but I wished that it would just go away. I knew enough about the Lord to pray and folks that's what I did. I mean under my breath I was praying to God because I just knew that I was done for! Finally, after prayer, I again peered through that tiny slight I allowed for my eyelids to open and it was no longer there. What a relief!

There were other instances that I may tell at another time but let me just say that I know this wasn't just the vivid imagination of a boy. I know what I saw. From the experiences of later years that extended even into adulthood, I can tell you, regardless of where they come from they are real.

These are creatures of the spirit world evil spirits doing the devil's work. They influence people to sin and do wrong. They tempt us in our minds. What do you think is influencing those murderers who have testified that something was speaking to them, telling them to do the horrendous and hideous things that they did? Science says that they are insane and to a degree that is true. But in reality they are yielding to an evil spirit creature a demon that has tempted them to do these things. Oh, I know I'm speaking in general terms here and that there are other things involved but basically this is the truth. Some of them have even passed themselves off as being God causing these criminals to believe they are doing the Lord's work.

While this is scary, concerning, and can put fear within us, as believers in Christ Jesus I am also here to tell you that they are powerless to do anything we don't allow them to do. They will take every inch we may give them and run with it. But with the Holy Spirit dwelling within us we do have the power to run them off, cast them out and make them flee. That's what the Bible says!

Hear the words of 1 John 4:4 "You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world." If you read the entire chapter of 1 John 4 you will discover that demonic power is exactly what he is speaking about. These powers are at work right now as much as they ever were, if not in greater force, and are intent to destroy the very souls of men and women. But when we come to Christ, He, by way of the Holy Spirit, takes up residence in us and He who is in us is greater more powerful, stronger, and more influential than he who is in this world. We can overcome these evil powers if we will dwell in the word of God and command them to leave us. When we do we will find that we don't have to yield to their temptations regardless how simple or complex they may be.

Yes, the devil and his army of demons is a powerful force. But God is greater!
