A Fleeing Devil

by Jerry Ousley
7/17/2015 / Christian Living

I awoke in the middle of the night. I woke up because I felt as though I was smothering. It took a few moments for me to get fully awake; you know how that is: You're conscious but not sure where you are, what day it is and you just need some time to clear your head.

I realized that it was a heavy weight on top of me, making me smother. I looked down and couldn't see anything. But neither could I move. It was as if something had the covers pulled tightly around me and was laying prostrate on me. I tried to speak but nothing came out. I was a Christian and knew something about demons and immediately recognized that a force of evil was at work. The only thing I could do was think, so in my thoughts I began saying the name, "Jesus." I repeated our Lord's name over and over. The weight shifted a bit and I was able to speak. I started whispering the name of Jesus. Finally, I could talk out loud and at the risk of awaking others in the house I shouted one time as loudly as I could, "JESUS!" I could literally feel whatever it was slipping over the foot of the bed and it was gone.

Now folks I'm not that brave of a person. I'm not one to go looking for demons and devils because frankly unless you know what you're doing you could find yourself in a real dangerous situation. I'm not afraid of demons but I am concerned what that evil spirit might make someone else do. The Bible tells us to flee from temptation and I take that to mean that we don't put ourselves in situations that could turn out badly. We are still human and we still have our weaknesses. But when we are confronted face to face with an evil spirit we aren't to run from a fight. As we have said, Jesus Christ within us by way of the Holy Spirit is greater than any demonic hoard.

We are told in James 4:7, "Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you." There it is, plain as day. We are told that the devil will run from us if we meet certain conditions. We have to do some resisting. We can't just tell the devil to run from us if we are toying with the idea of submitting to whatever it may be that he's tempting us with. It's the same when we encounter an evil spirit. Now not everyone is going to come face to face with a demon. Most people go on their merry way, fulfilling their daily plans oblivious to the spirit world around them. Something pops in their head that is wrong and they just simply yield to it and do it without a second thought that it is the influence of an evil spirit.

As believers in Christ we have another aspect of the spirit world at work in us. Because the Holy Spirit lives in us He is constantly reminding us of what is right and wrong. When we are tempted by the evil spirit He is right there to help and strengthen us. If we consciously tell the devil "NO," the Holy Spirit will come to our aid and we don't have to commit whatever sin it may be that the devil has tempted us with.

Also know that the devil is a sly fox. He's not going to tempt us with something that we have no desire to do. He knows what rings our bells, pushes our buttons, and perks our interest. You can be sure that's where he's going to be coming from.

Sometimes it's just hard to resist. That's where the first part of this verse comes in. Before we can really do any resisting, the key is to submit ourselves to God. Each and every day of our lives the very first thing we should do every morning is to make certain we do what we need to do to submit to Him. When we do we arm ourselves with what is necessary to resist the devil. When we are in submission to the Lord and the devil comes knocking, we don't always win because it depends upon our resistance. But when we do, the very God we have submitted ourselves to will come to our aid. And you can bet your bottom dollar when God steps up on the scene that bully of a devil will turn tail and run.
