Being the Encourager

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. (Ephesians 4:29 NIV)

If asked, would people say that you are an encourager to others? Do you encourage your children when they are struggling or scared? Do you encourage your spouse when he or she is tired and worried? Do you encourage a friend when their world falls down around them?

To encourage is to cheer up, motivate, or inspire someone but sometimes it is hard to be an encourager, especially when it seems like your own life is in shambles. It is not easy to be the encourager often but it is necessary. The bible tells us that we should not let "unwholesome talk" come out of our mouths. A way to do this is to stop and think about what you intend to say before you say it. Instead of belittling someone, try praying with them. It will benefit them more than anything else you can do.

Dear Lord, Thank you for the encouragers you have put in my life. I pray that you will instill in me a way to encourage others too even when I am weary. May my words be yours so they will be cheered up, motivated or inspired to go on. Amen.
