Cousins Consumed by Debate About Afterlife

by Greg Miller
8/03/2015 / Christian Living

Four cousins Gail, George, Granger and Goldie were all convinced of the reality of everlasting life.

All of them had heard the message of the gospel of salvation and everlasting life through the sacrifice of Jesus on the Cross for sin. None of them, however, could seem to grasp that truth about faith.

Granger was a big believer in the Golden Rule, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

"I'm sure I'll go to heaven if I treat others the way I want to be treated," Granger reasoned.

Gail responded, "You may have a point, but I also have something for you to consider. I think if a person simply believes there is a Higher Power any higher power, that will get him or her into heaven."

"You gotta be kidding!" George shouted. "I think each of us must give $500 every week, because we have to give God the money with which to build our mansions."

"That can't be true," Granger objected. "I don't even earn that much money."

"No one must give God any money to build him or her a mansion!" Goldie scolded. "Besides, God owns all the world's money.

"According to the Bible, He owns the cattle on a thousand hills. That probably means He owns the hills, all the precious metals under the hills and even the atmosphere over the hills."

"What if Jesus isn't the only way to be saved?" questioned Granger. "What if Jesus is only one of many ways to God?"

"Many people are asking that question," Goldie answered. "There is only one problem with that. According to the Bible, Jesus Himself said 'I am the way, the truth and the life.' He said He was the way, not a way."

"The Bible teaches Jesus died on the Cross to save everyone from sin," said George. "I've read the Bible, and John 3:16 says, 'For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.' But, seriously, does it make sense that one person could die on a cross, shed all His blood and be qualified to save the entire world's population?"

"No it doesn't make sense to the natural human mind," said Goldie. "That's the point. It's not supposed to make sense to us mentally. It's much more of a spiritual thing."

The Holy Spirit had been working on the hearts of the four cousins. "I think all of us should kneel together right here in my living room and give our hearts to the Lord Jesus and ask Him to forgive our sins," said Goldie, tears streaming down her cheeks.

"Amen," said the cousins, dropping to their knees. "Amen."
