Skipping Class

Did you ever skip class or an entire day from school? I'm ashamed to admit it; skipping classes was a common practice for me during my high school years. I had partners in crime; I would have been lonely without companions. The Book of Jonah is more than a fish story; he skipped God's assignment and went into hiding. We find Jonah in a crowded ship after he skipped town

"The word of the LORD came to Jonah the son of Amittai saying, "Arise, go to Nineveh the great city and cry against it, for their wickedness has come up before Me." But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD. So he went down to Joppa, found a ship which was going to Tarshish, paid the fare and went down into it to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD (Jonah 1:1-3 NAS)."

Jonah merely stalled his mission. He could skip town but he could not flee from the Father.

I search for key points when reading scripture; I don't want to skip over God's message. In Jonah, the LORD looked favorably on a repentant city.

"When God saw their deeds, that they turned from their wicked way, then God relented concerning the calamity which He had declared He would bring upon them. And He did not do it (Jonah 3:10 NAS)."
