Willful Ignorance

by Steve Countryman
8/14/2015 / Christian Living

Willful ignorance is a choice! It's a phrase that comes to mind whenever I read or hear about carnal Christians and worldly churches. Knowing the Word of God but ignoring the Word of God. Knowing the difference between good and evil but choosing evil. Knowing what righteous living is but choosing to live selfishly. Knowing of the Holy Spirit but denying His power. Knowing the salvation work of the cross but adding works of the flesh to it to earn their way into heaven.

Worrying about offending people at the expense of offending their God. Believing that the Bible is the Word of God but doesn't apply to today's modern world. Picking and choosing which scriptures they feel good about and which scriptures they ignore. They agree with the Word of God as long as it doesn't offend them. Then they choose to ignore those parts of His Word that do. There are churches across our country that have chosen not to quote scriptures because they don't want to offend or run off any parishioners. Too many churches have compromised away the Word of God for the sake of attracting and keeping church members. Choosing to be people pleasers not God pleasers is willful ignorance!

Those are known as the "feel good" and "friendly seeker" churches. They are no longer houses of God but social clubs. You can't call them houses of God if God is not in them! Why would He want to be? They take away and censor His Word. They strip the power of the Holy Spirit from the Word. They make fun of other "full gospel" churches for believing the entire Word of God. They only want a god on their terms not on God's terms. Then they wonder why God doesn't show up. Why aren't miracles being performed in their churches? Their lips drip lies and deception laced with a little gospel to make it more palatable. They offer promises of a better life without offering the author of hope and salvation is willful ignorance!

Recently I heard a TV preacher that I have watched and enjoyed his teachings in the past say that today's church is evolving. That it needs to so it can accommodate the LGBT communities of homosexuals. That if you are "gay" that you should find a church that you like and make that your home church. He is now embracing the sin along with the sinner! I can't find that in the Bible. No mention of their sinful lifestyle that needs to change, that is willful ignorance!

1 Corinthians 5:1-2 "1 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that even pagans do not tolerate: A man is sleeping with his father's wife. 2 And you are proud! Shouldn't you rather have gone into mourning and have put out of your fellowship the man who has been doing this?" This church accepted this sin as normal, embracing the sin along with the sinner.

Revelation 2:14-16 "14 Nevertheless, I have a few things against you: There are some among you who hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to entice the Israelites to sin so that they ate food sacrificed to idols and committed sexual immorality. 15 Likewise, you also have those who hold to the teaching of the Nicolaitans. 16 Repent therefore! Otherwise, I will soon come to you and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth." The teaching of the Nicolaitans that was allowed in the church compromised the Word of God by polluting and diluting it of its truth and power. Their Nicolaitan teaching perverts grace and replaces liberty with license and is willful ignorance!

The teaching and practices of the Nicolaitans in today church would sum up the modern church well. Blending more and more of the secular world views and beliefs at the cost of true Bible teachings and instructions. This is how Jesus describes "preachers" who embrace the sin along with the sinnerMatthew 7:15-17 15 "Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. 16 By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit."

So the question isWhere does your church and pastor stand on the Bible? Where do they stand on sexual immorality? Where do they stand on addictions? Where do they stand on adultery and living together out of wedlock? Where do they stand on abortions? Where do they stand on receiving the baptism of the Holy Spirit? Where do they stand on the "gifts of the Holy Spirit"? Do you ever hear your pastor preach on any of these topics? If not, why not? Have you ever asked your pastor for his/her position on these topics? Are they the type to tell you what you want to hear in private but never admits it front of their congregation?

Time of willful ignorance is over! Time to make a stand and time to take a stand. If you are attending one of those above mentioned lifeless and Godless churches then it is time for you to make a change. Time is running short and you dont have time to waste at a social club pretending to be a church. Find a Bible believing, God fearing church and plant yourself there. Ask God to direct you to one that needs you as well as one you need. If you have been blessed to attend such a fine church then bring a friend. God is waiting for you!
