Living In The Past?
by Annagail Lynes

But Lot's wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt. - Genesis 19:26
Sometimes our past will catch up with us.
An old flame comes back into our lives when we are in a relationship that lacks passion.
An old job wants us back.
Relatives criticize every decision you have ever made.
Sometimes we get the sense of wanting to pack up and start over somewhere else--another city, another state, another country.
We want the opportunity to put boundaries between us and our past.
Are we running from something? Maybe.
Are we running toward something? Perhaps.
Maybe if we stay, we will continue to live in sin. Perhaps that is why we want such dramatic boundaries.
Maybe we just want to start a new life somewhere else.
Whatever we do and why we do it, we must remember to put in place solid boundaries that keep us from looking back, from slipping back into our pasts.
The past is past. We must look to the future, and keep moving forward.
When we move forward, that is when we get the healing we need. When we move forward, that is when we progress toward our goals, our dreams, our destiny.
Paul writes in Philippians 3:13, "Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead,"
We must do this as well. Forget what is behind and strain toward what is ahead.
We all want closure on things, so that we can tie up the past in a little box in our head.
Only some times the best closure is to surrender the situation to God and let Him heal it.
Sometimes closure is just an excuse to go hang out in the past, to analyze it, to figure out what happened.
We must let God heal us. Let God take care of our wounds, and move forward, taking on the new challenges and experiences God has for us.
