Who is on the Lord's Side?

by Jerry Ousley
9/24/2015 / Christian Living

As a kid I loved baseball and softball. I wasn't a power-hitter but sometimes I could get the ball out there far enough to get a couple of bases. I was a good runner too. I could nearly get at least two bases on every hit. But I wasn't a very good catcher. Somehow I'd think I was right under the ball as it made its descent and I'd still miss it by a few feet. For that reason, when it came time to choose teams, I was always one of the last to be picked. I hated that but I guess someone has to be last.

Choosing a side is very important in team competitive sports. We want the best players on our side. We want those who will be committed to winning the game, playing with the team and making wise choices that will benefit the team more than the individual.

We knew a young lady who was very talented in basketball. She was a good player when it came to running with the ball, dribbling, and shooting. But she wasn't a good team member because frankly she was a ball hog. She wanted to be the one making the points and sometimes she'd take chances, even losing the ball because she wouldn't pass it. She wanted to score.

Being on a team means that sometimes we make sacrifices for the team. Going back to baseball, often a batter will bunt the ball knowing that he's going to get out on first but the sacrifice will allow other runners to score. It may not go good on his record but it could mean the difference between winning and losing the game.

In Exodus 32 we read the story of how the people of Israel sinned in making the golden calf even while Moses was still on top of Mount Sinai receiving the commandments from God. Most of them danced, feasted and worshipped this object that had no feeling, no life, and no compassion choosing it over the great God Jehovah.

God sent Moses back down the mountain to put a stop to this sin. Apparently not all were involved. Reading between the lines of the account it would appear that some refused to be involved in this horrible event.

In verse 26 we see Moses standing at the entrance to the camp saying, "Whoever is on the LORD's side come to me!" All the Levites immediately went to his side. What happened next seemed very tragic, and it was, but we must remember the message of the Old Testament To show the justice of God. All those who had come to the LORD's side were instructed to get their swords and at the command go throughout the camp killing those who had worshipped this golden image of a calf. That day three thousand people died.

It is representative of purging sin from our lives. As believers in Christ Jesus we are called yet today to take a side. The cry goes out daily, "Who is on the LORD's side?" Our answer is critical. We must choose the side of the LORD. Otherwise we open ourselves up to possible tragedy in our daily Christian experience. We are exposing ourselves to the dangers of sin.

It's great gaining a victory over something in our lives that stands between us and the LORD. I never want to diminish these great wins in our lives. On the other hand, each day presents a new challenge to win another victory in God. We can weed the sin out of our lives. We can gain new victories with each day. But it means that we must ask ourselves every day, "Am I on the LORD's side?" Then we answer that question by standing with Him. How about it; are you on the LORD's side?
