Letting Go

by Steve Countryman
10/01/2015 / Devotionals

In this vision is a man who is stranded atop a metal pole that is way up in the air. Down below him is a body of water that completely surrounds this pole with no land or structures in sight. In the water are sharks in the middle of a feeding frenzy. The man is stuck there towards the top of this pole. This is no ordinary metal pole but a lightening rod. In the distance is a huge lightening storm headed his way.

The pole represents life. The water with the hungry sharks represents the perils of life. The man stranded on the pole represents the bad decisions we make that put us there. The coming storm represents the coming judgment.

Luke 6:6-11 "6On another Sabbath he went into the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was shriveled. 7 The Pharisees and the teachers of the law were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath. 8 But Jesus knew what they were thinking and said to the man with the shriveled hand, 'Get up and stand in front of everyone.' So he got up and stood there. 9 Then Jesus said to them, 'I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?' 10 He looked around at them all, and then said to the man, 'Stretch out your hand.' He did so, and his hand was completely restored. 11 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law were furious and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus."

This story shows how stuck and deceived the Pharisees and the teachers of the law were in their religious traditions. That they would rather leave their congregation sick and lame then to allow them to be healed on the Sabbath. The leaders won't let go of their traditions even for the sake of those they are charged with. Even after they witnessed the miraculous healing of the man's hand those same leaders were furious with Jesus instead of rejoicing in the man's healing.

Back to the vision; the situation seems hopeless. In fact that is exactly what the Devil wants everyone to believe. That you are stuck there with no escape. That your best bet is to just stay stuck there and maybe you'll get lucky and not get hit by lightening. Then the lies and deception that led you there are what you start to hear again. Trying to justify why you are still stuck there. That coworker that said hateful things about you. The ex-girlfriend/boyfriend that treated you badly. The schoolmate who stole your crush. The boss who keeps passing you over for promotion. The addiction that has bound you. The compromises you've made that have sunk you deeper into a lifestyle you hate.

God has sent a helicopter to rescue you. It flies over close to where you are stranded on that pole. But the winds from the approaching storm are buffeting it. God has dropped a rope down from the helicopter but it is just out of your reach. In fact the only way to grab the rope is to let go of the pole and reach out for the rope. You have to be willing to let go of the pole, to let go of your old lifestyle, your old grudges and un-forgiveness, your hatred, your addictions, the spirit of religion and all of those things that have been holding you to that pole. It is those things that are meant to hurt and destroy you that you must let go of. To grab hold of the things that God has to save and bless you with will take courage and determination. But God will help you do so. Because if you continue to hold on to you old life and the lies that go with it, that pole, you will be destroyed.
