Worried?

by Annagail Lynes

Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? - Matthew 6:27 (KJV).

Worry. It is the nastiest of all habits. It is doesn't come with a warning label like cigarettes or alcohol, but it should.

Worry is the leading cause of anxiety disorders, and one of the most prescribed class of drugs is antidepressants.

Worry is a big problem.

Only worry is an unproductive activity. It is like being a hamster running on a wheel. We are exerting a lot of effort, but we are not getting anywhere.

All worry stems from a troubled heart.

John 14:27 tells us to let not our hearts be troubled.

How do we let not our hearts be troubled?

Two things:

Philippians 4:6-7 urges us to bring our requests before God and thank Him for what He is about to do in our lives. Then the peace of God will guard our heart.

Isaiah 26:3 says that God will keep us in perfect peace when our mind is stayed on Him.

I submit that after we bring our requests to God and thank Him for what He has done, is doing and will do for us, that we keep praising Him, keep thanking Him, keep meditating on Scriptures about His goodness, His faithfulness, His love, His mercy and His grace.

The more we meditate on God's Word, the more we thank and praise Him, we crowd out the worry.

Worry is meditation on the bad. Why not use that same force for good by meditating on the goodness of our God?

It has to be a deliberate, consistent effort on our part.

If we do this, before long we will see a shift--in our attitude and in the unmovable circumstances in our lives.

Question of the day: What are you worried about today?
