The Love Buzzer

by Jerry Ousley
2/19/2016 / Christian Living

People have a built in buzzer. Let me explain. I think ever since I was a small boy that I've been attracted to women. I mean, as a child not yet in my teens I secretly thought that certain girls were attractive. I had no idea what this boy/girl relationship was all about; all I knew was that somehow this pretty blond six year old made my heart go thumpity-thump. The difficulty came in the fact that most boys under the age of ten seem to hate girls. I could see that when the girl was your sister, but not when she was someone else's sister. However in order to survive in the world of single digit boys (boys under ten), I pretended that I didn't like girls.

The moment the other boys started being attracted to girls I immediately dropped my mask and let my true feelings emerge. My very first love was a cute blond by the name of Mary. She was the one amongst all the others that stood out. In my little mind she stood on the princess pedestal. There was only one problem. Another kid by the name of Mackey Mann liked Mary too (nope, I'm not kidding; that was his name). My problem arose in the fact that Mackey was also the tough guy, the one all the other boys seemed to hover around like flies on well, there could be a lot of things that would finish that statement so let's just not go there. I had let Mary know on the playground that I liked her. I don't know if she liked me too or if it was just the way the girls chose their guys but somehow she acted as if she had no other choice but to be with Mackey (when I say be with that's about all I mean; when a boy of that age liked a girl all he really did was stand beside her, very seldom talking or anything like that just being there). Anyway, it looked as if the only way I was going to be able to stand around with Mary was to get through Mackey. Like I said, he was the tough kid with all the other boys hanging around him (isn't that a pretty picture? A blond girl with a tough guy standing beside her and all these other guys just standing around behind Mackey!).

I started watching Mary. When Mackey and his crew weren't around, I'd go stand beside her and she didn't seem to mind. But when Mackey showed up I had to go elsewhere quickly. The day came when I didn't go somewhere else quickly enough and Mackey caught me standing beside of Mary. He and his gang walked up to me screaming and hollering like it was going to be my last day on earth. I don't know what I would have done to him if that bell hadn't sounded and we all had to go back in the school (saved by the bell again).

The point to this little story is that all people, men and women, have this built in buzzer that makes them take a second look at each other. That buzzer was put there by God. It seems to be louder and goes off more in the men than in the women. The only explanation I have for that is that had God not made the buzzer in men to reach out and demand that he look at a woman we'd probably miss out altogether on having a mate and just focus on our work and interests without even thinking about it. So the buzzer is louder and goes off quicker in men so we don't miss out.

I realize it works differently in the world of today; attractions seem to last only for a few days, perhaps even what we refer to as a "one night stand" but it wasn't meant to be that way. In our modern society it seems that a date is expected to end with sexual relations that bear no meaning at all. But folks, I know I'm a bit old fashioned but it was never meant to be that way. When the buzzer sounds it doesn't mean that were going in for round three, but that this lady might be worth taking a second look at. If she is the God-given one then the relationship will progress until the couple is united in marriage and only then are the sexual relations natural and acceptable. I know, I know; I'm not with the program, but folks, no matter what might be accepted by today's standards doesn't make it right at all.

Listen to the words of Jesus as found in Matthew 19:4-6, "And He answered and said to them, 'Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning 'MADE THEM MALE AND FEMALE,' and said, 'FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER AND BE JOINED TO HIS WIFE, AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH'? So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no man separate.'" That doesn't sound much like a one night stand to me.

It's natural that the buzzer goes off; but it is just to get our attention. After that we aren't supposed to become animals but seek to know if he or she is that one. If not we stop looking and move on (we don't test the waters first if you catch my drift). When we discover that perfect one the one we were created to be with, we'll know. And we'll live happily ever after or will we? You'll have to wait until next week to find out more.
