How To Succeed In Life Without Really Trying

Wouldn't it be great if we could just walk along through life and everything just fell into our laps? Wouldn't it be wonderful if everyone agreed with us and we were well liked by all? What kind of life would we have if we got up every day when we wanted to, did what we wanted to and had plenty of money to pay for it all without having to work and make a living? Ah wouldn't life be great?

But facts are facts. There was a book written in 1952 by Shepherd Mead, and then rewritten later by Abe Burrows, Jack Weinstocks, and Willie Gilbert. It was a very popular play in the early sixties and was made into a musical movie in 1967. It was called "How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying." In it a young man got a job in the mail room located in the basement and one event led to another and within a matter of days he found himself high in the company. He had not attended college; he really knew nothing about the business and just happened to be in the right place at the right time. But we all know that it is a far-fetched fantasy. Today even with an education in the industry it isn't an easy chore to land a job. And, unless you just have the right name or are related to the president of the company, moving up can take years.

It would be wonderful, great, stupendous and a whole lot of other descriptive words if we could live our lives this way. But the fact of the matter is, unless we are filthy rich it most likely isn't going to happen. How do we succeed in life without really trying? The simple matter-of-fact answer is, "We Can't."

Now we could just leave it at that, pop the balloon over our heads in which we dream about such a thing and sing "Woe is me," as we amble through our days. The old show that ran for years and is still syndicated on some TV channels, "Hee-Haw" demonstrates that attitude. In nearly every program they ran a segment where they sang the song, "Gloom, despair and agony on me; deep dark depression, excessive misery. If it weren't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all; gloom, despair, and agony on me." It was funny to think about, until we realize that many go through life just this way. Some even think the world owes them a living and they are to be taken care of. One of the great problems in our nation today is the many millions who live totally off the Government but who are capable of working and making a living. Now don't get me wrong; I'm not speaking of those on unemployment who have lost their jobs and can't find one. I'm not making accusations to those whose health has failed them, or who have been sorely wounded in war, an automobile accident or whatever. I have no problem paying taxes for people who have just found themselves victims of circumstances beyond their control and frankly am thankful that we have programs to help them. No, I'm speaking of those who refuse to do anything for themselves but who are capable of doing it. That very attitude brings on the gloom, despair and agony on me.

Over the next few weeks I'm going to be sharing some things with you that will make us successful in life. But from a spiritual standpoint even if we are filthy rich we cannot succeed in life without trying. We must try. Listen to the words of God to the people of Israel under Joshua's leadership: "This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success." (Joshua 1:8). Now I realize that this is from the Old Testament and the Law spoken of is the Law given by Moses. I also realize that as believers in Christ we are not bound by the law. Yet the same principle applies. If we live our Christian life in the same manner then we can claim the words, "For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success."
