Fishers Of Men

by Leonard Granger
4/06/2016 / Christian Living

Having been in the wholesale fishing tackle business for the past 46 years as a "Wagon Jobber" calling on fishing bait and tackle stores, I have learned what are the best items to catch that prized fish. On the market today there are many different lures, some with fancy names and colors made to attract fishermen , however, fish are very particular and attracted to only certain items.

When our Lord Jesus began preaching he headed to the sea coast of the Galilee Sea. The Bible tells us in Matthew 4:12 and 17, " Now when Jesus had heard that John( The Baptist) was cast into prison, he departed into Galilee........From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent; for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." Our Lord preached God's Word, as He was sent by his Father to save the world. It was a message many people of the day realized was what they had been seeking, as our Lord knew what people needed.

We read that Jesus became the first fisher of men, the men who became his first Disciples verses 18-22, " And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishers. And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. And they straightway left their nets and followed him. And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee. and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them. And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him. "

So the first four Disciples of our Lord were skilled fishermen and they learned as they followed Jesus Verse 23...." about all of Galilee, teaching in the synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people." They went throughout Syria, Judea and Jordan speaking to great multitudes of people.

Matthew 5:1-2, tells us, " And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain; and when he was set, his disciples came unto him; and he opened his mouth. and taught them saying." As the disciples and the people listened Jesus preached the Beatitudes, God's Word telling how we as Christians should live on the earth. In Matthew Chapters of 5, 6 and 7 our gracious and loving Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in detail clearly explains the many trials and tribulations we will encounter as His servants.

Chapter 7: 28-29, " And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine. For he taught them as one having authority, not as the scribes.'.... When he was come down from the mountain great multitudes following him." Yes, our Lord Jesus knew as a Fisher of Men what the people needed to hear and understand. It was not what the church leaders of the day thought the people needed but the multitudes heard Truth from God's Word, and it was preached to them first hand.

Trust this Sunday we will all take the time to worship our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in the church of our choice.
