Cure Your Troubled Heart

by Dr. Henderson Ward
6/25/2016 / Christian Living

The time is a few minutes past eight in the morning and I am sitting at the computer writing this article after the most severe pounding of distorted and self-serving information I've been served via the internet for quite some time.

The Brits had a few days ago, two days to be precise, voted to leave the European Union (EU) and it seems that the end of the world is nigh.

The losers in the campaign, the ones who voted for (to remain in the European Union), who on Thursday before the votes were counted thought they had won, and so praised the referendum for giving them the opportunity to assert their EU fidelity, are now saying all manner of frightful things about the referendum and those voting to leave.

And the winners, on the other hand, seem as clueless as to what comes next as the rabbit that awoke to find it staring eyeball to eyeball with a huge, hungry snake.

And when you think that the question of Britain's place in the EU is now settled, there are those who are asking for a fresh referendum, because there is no way, they say, that they can accept the results.

Further, about an hour ago I read where the losers have raised a million signatures for this fresh referendum, and I have absolutely no doubt that a sector of the Mainstream media will push this for all it's worth.

The stock markets across the globe has fallen.

The currencies of many countries are doing somersaults one way, and a few hours later doing somersaults the other way, in a huge panic of great, contagious uncertainty.

The global economy is set to crash, says some. The EU, with the largest gross domestic product of any regional grouping, is about to unravel, and it will lead to friction and war, say others.

All of this confusion at a time when unnecessary wars are ripping the planet apart, the crises of refugees are exploding, climate change is pushing the planet towards extinction, and the moral climate is so toxic that decency seems to be near being exterminated.

Everywhere you look you will see ample evidence of people that have defied God. Sin is on the increase, wickedness is rampant, evil is practiced everywhere, and the godless elites are being feted like heroes. But you cannot defy God, and not pay the consequences. Never.

What is happening now, and will continue to happen across the world, is as a result of choices that were made, and no power on earth can stop the consequences.

Bad choices were made in going to war with Iraq and Saddam Hussein, bad choices were made in destabilising and then destroying Libya, bad choices were made in destabilising Syria and supporting rebel action against its government. These bad choices led to a flow of refugees away from these war zones toward Europe, and Europe became overwhelmed with refugees, awakening Xenophobia and the wish to keep foreigners out, and eventually it led to Britain voting to leave the EU.

Unfortunately, the bad choices that governments and leaders and we, the ordinary people make, impact the guilty perpetrators as well as the innocent victims. In spite of what people say, it is manifestly true that the innocents do suffer with the guilty, and believers best option is to understand the magnitude of what is happening, and relate it to the unerring word of God as given to us in the Holy Bible.

All of this should remind us that God knows best.

Everything that is happening, or will happen, is familiar with God, and he has most carefully set out for us, not just what will happen, but prepares us for their arrival, and how we are to respond to them.

When Jesus was coming to the end of his earthly ministry, and just before the feast of Passover, he assembled his disciples in a room to clue them up for a torrid time that was almost upon them. Jesus turned to his apostles and said these famous words, "Let not your heart be troubled..." (John 14:1)

Jesus knew that in times of turbulence, many of his followers would let troublesome events get to them, to destroy their peace of mind, to disturb them and shake them to their core, and might even topple them from their standing in Christ. Therefore, he cautioned, "Let not your heart be troubled..."

Cast your mind back to the apostles' situation and see the issues ahead of them. Jesus was going away quite soon, he was to be betrayed by one of them, he was to go through a humiliating trial, his own specially chosen apostles would deny him, he was to be brutally murdered though innocent, his disciples were to be viciously persecuted for his sake, and the earthly kingdom that they expected would be gone forever.

You are not defeated by the multitude of challenges you are facing, otherwise there is no hope for any of us. You are defeated if you allow the challenges to blind you to the solutions.

Jesus Christ always points the way forward, but sometimes we are so caught up with toing and froing, with the hurly burly of everyday existence, that we do not take time to make proper inquiry and seek proper guidance form Almighty God.

A lot is happening in the world, there is much disquiet, a lot of fear is around, instability is everywhere, people are anxious for themselves, their family and even their neighbourhood, and there seems to be no end in sight.

"Let not your heart be troubled..." Sometimes the dreadful nightmares of challenges and problems that grip us, and hold us captive, seem to be unending, and it seems that we will never be free from them, we can see no light at the end of the tunnel, there seem to be no escape, no liberation. God counsels otherwise, because he gives us the assurance that, "Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning." (Psalm 30:5)

This means that in deepest gloom, and let's face it, sometimes we find ourself in that dismal place, when the efforts of others are futile, when you observe things cascading out of control, then it is imperative to focus your mind on what God can, and will do at your request, and rejoice that he is supremely able "to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us" (Ephesians 3: 20)

"Let not your heart be troubled..." because God is in charge and will make sure that "all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose." (Romans 8:28)

As difficult as it may seem sometimes, even your severest misfortune can be the means of your growth and maturity in Christ. You may fall down a deep well, and there find the treasure you were seeking all your life, spiritually speaking. It is about having faith in God and never doubting his promises and assurances; even in the face of severe difficulty.

Remember that God is still doing impossible things.

They say you can't live more than three days without water yet, May 2016, Kenyan rescuers pulled a seven-month-old girl alive from the rubble of a six-storey building in Nairobi, four days after the block collapsed during heavy rains killing at least 23 people.

We still our hearts when we remember that with God all things are possible. (Matthew 19:26)

"Let not your heart be troubled..." because God guarantees your success through his promises and the person of Jesus Christ. It is of great importance to know, without a doubt, that God will not let you be defeated, as long as you hold on to him. Hold on to Jesus and he will never let you go.

In times of crises, when turmoil is everywhere, and fear is causing havoc across the globe, it is not some great plan, we need nor is promised but a person, i.e., Jesus Christ.

Listen to this guarantee given to all believers, "And, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen." (Matthew 28:20)

This is JESUS being with you, in person, in your every battle, in your gloomier moments, at times of desperation, and tragedy, and in times like now, when the world seems to have gone mad. If nothing else can cure your aching, troubled heart, then turn to God, through Jesus Christ, for a fresh anointing, and infilling, and then be brave and stand firm, as the Bible says, "and having done all, to stand." (Ephesians 6:13)

Enough said.
