Birth Order

by PamFord Davis
7/20/2016 / Devotionals

Psychologists might try to match personality traits to the birth order within families. I am a middle child and once heard a psychologist say that middle children attempt to solve people's problems. (Notice, I said 'attempt' to solve.)

I'm dead-center; in our family of 5 children. The oldest, a sister, was 7 years older than me. The youngest, my only brother, is 7 years younger. In Jesus' extended family, John the Baptist was first in birth order

The angel Gabriel told Mary that she was to birth the Son of the Highest. (Luke 1:31) He also informed her of an advanced pregnancy in her family.

"Now indeed, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren (Luke 1:36 NKJV)."

Elizabeth gave birth to John. As a man, he preached a message of repentance; preparing the way for Jesus' public ministry.

"And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. John bore witness of Him and cried out, saying, 'This was He of whom I said, 'He who comes after me is preferred before me, for He was before me (John 1:14-15 NKJV)."

John did not have their birth order confused. He bore witness to Jesus, the Word.

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men (John 1:1-4 NKJV)."
