Looking for the Day

by Jerry Ousley

I looked and I looked and I looked. I couldn't find it anywhere! Our all-allusive cordless phone had been left somewhere and I couldn't find it. I needed to make a call so where was this thing? Of course, we have more than one phone in the house. There's an old wall phone in the kitchen that we keep around because when the power goes out it still works. I've also got a phone upstairs in my office. And Deb and I both have a cell phone. I could have easily gone to one of the other phones; but we needed to find this one. It became a quest and so I continued to search. But after hunting through every room in the house twice, still no phone.

About that time Deb's sister stopped by. While visiting with Deb she noticed that I was going from room to room, picking up stuff and searching for something. "What are you looking for?" she asked. "We've lost the phone," I answered, "and I'm just not sure where it is."

"Have you tried beeping the base for it?" she responded. I looked at her a bit dumb-founded because, well frankly I didn't know you could do that. She went to where we kept the base of the phone and pushed a button. Immediately we could hear the phone responding and after following the beeping sound we found it under the cushions of the couch. I hadn't thought to look there. I felt a little silly, I mean, after all, here I am, a computer freak and all. I work on high tech computers but I didn't know how to beep for the phone. My sister-in-law sported a look of satisfaction, and I suppose I would too if I had been able to teach a techie something new.

Jesus spoke to His disciples of a day that was coming in John 16:23-28. The day He was referring to was the day in which His death, paying the penalty for the sin of mankind, and resurrection, which was symbolic of the victory won in conquering sin, would be accomplished. After that day Jesus said that His disciples (which includes all those who would follow) would not have to rely on Him any longer to seek God's will. They could now go to the Father for themselves, on behalf of themselves. A priest (a go-between) would no longer be needed.

What a glorious day it was. Naturally it was sad that Jesus had to die in our place. And it was miraculous to say the least when He arose from the grave. He accomplished that day. Now we need to ask ourselves the question, "Are we looking for that day?" That may sound like a strange question; after all, Jesus has paid the price and made the way. When we accept Him as Savior we have moved into that day.

The problem I see is that a large number of Christians still haven't realized that day. They still rely on their pastor to seek God in their behalf. They seldom pray to the Father for themselves, seldom read the Bible for their own instruction, and seldom look for a personal, real-to-life relationship with God outside of their church.

Some are just ambling along in life and hope that they are going to make it into Heaven. Others are in this relationship for what they can get from it for their own personal gain. Still others have gone through life with years of knowing God, but not really knowing Him. You know how that can be; how many people do we know, but don't really know? We remember their names, recognize their faces and their voice, but we have never moved beyond casual conversations. We don't really know what's going on in their lives and when something tragic happens we're shocked because we weren't aware of the problems leading up to it. That's how a lot of people know God. They are aware of Him; they may even have gone forward in an altar call and made a commitment to Him. They have received Jesus into their lives but haven't really given Him complete control or taken the time to seek His will for their lives.

Have we been looking for the day? If so, that day is here and now. We can know God as Father. We can have a spiritual relationship with Christ and the Holy Spirit can be, and is, our constant companion. Realize what that day really means in your life. Take time to talk with the Father and read the Bible because a lot of what you're looking for is answered right there. Once done, you'll no longer be looking for that day because you will then be living in it.
