Introducing Me to Me - Part 1

by Jerry Ousley
9/09/2016 / Christian Living

Here's a scenario I'd bet we'll never see: Our child has behaved badly. They have gone against our instructions and done something we've told them not to do. Okay, they deserve to be punished. In most cases that child will try to hide what they've done. If they've gotten into the cake in between meals they'll try to smooth the frosting, or rearrange it so that it might not look suspicious (I know because I've done that before). Or, if they've gotten into your magazine collection or whatever else it may be, they'll make certain to attempt to put them back in the same order with the same side up as they were before they got into them (I know that one too because when we were growing up my Dad had a comic book collection. I'd sneak into the room and sit sometimes for hours reading them knowing that he didn't want me handling them).

That's the normal response. They will try to keep what they have done a secret so that the parents don't find out. When we, as parents, do find out then we punish them for their wrong behavior.

But what if, when a child realizes that he or she has fallen into temptation and done something that Mom or Dad has told them not to do, they put themselves in a corner for a time out? Wouldn't that be great? If you ever figure out how to make that happen please send me an email because I know a lot of parents who'd like to learn that secret.

In reality more than likely and in most cases this will never happen. That's because we, as adults, aren't very good examples. We do the same thing. It happens on our jobs. It happens in life. How many people, when given too much change at the grocery store, will bring it to the clerk's attention? Some will. I have. But in every case, at least for me, the temptation is present to just rack it up as my good fortune.

What about our leaders? How many politicians have been caught up in something who, when exposed, have made speeches telling how sorry they are for their actions? But if they were really sorry for what they have done they'd give that speech before they were caught. In reality they are not as sorry for what they've done as they are for being caught The truth's the truth.

The closest that a public figure has come to doing this was David Letterman when he admitted on his show that he had had sex with some of his female employees. But I don't think that he would have ever done that if it hadn't been for his former employee who had threatened to expose him. What David Letterman did was to beat the guy to the punch. It made him look good in the eyes of the public but had it not been for the threat of exposure would he have ever done that? Would he have ever admitted it to his wife? I doubt it.

We want to hide our sins, our mistakes, and our errors so that we look better. But as Christians this isn't the way we are supposed to do it. Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 11:31, "For if we would judge ourselves, we would not be judged." Now in the full context of this verse he was writing about participating in the Communion under false pretenses. But the statement holds true for us in all situations.

What Paul is saying is that if when we know we've done wrong (and in nearly every case we do) we would take a good look at ourselves, admit to our wrong doing, and repent to the Lord then and there on the spot that it would save us from being judged by God. In other words the apostle is suggesting that we step into the corner without being told to do so.

We're going to be writing more about this in the next few weeks. But for now let's examine ourselves. When we know that we've done wrong let's be big enough to admit it, correct it and go stand in the corner.
