What to Work For

by Greg Robbins
10/07/2016 / Bible Studies

Jesus gives such detailed instructions and commands. Even though, unless God opens our spiritual eyes, we still won't understand what he is saying.

In a way, I almost feel sorry for Jesus. He was not understood, accepted, or obeyed while walking this earth; and things haven't changed much since then. Jesus is revered today much like the Queen of England is. We call Jesus Lord and King, we sing songs of praise and worship to him, we tell him how much we love him, we even tell others about him. It's all kind of fun and it makes us feel good. But just like the Queen of England, Jesus has no real authority or power over people. We call him Savior and Lord, but we don't obey him.

It was the exact same way when Jesus walked the earth. Luke 6:46 "And why do you call me, Lord, Lord, and do not do the things which I say?" I don't have to look very far to prove my point.

Last year I went camping up in Tennessee. I was testifying to a woman how that I lived by faith and how God supplied everything that I needed. The campground we were staying in was about 15 miles, mostly on one lane gravel roads, to the nearest town. I decided to stay longer than originally planned and I saw that I would need more drinking water. So I prayed for drinking water and the Lord provided it for me. When I testified of this to the woman, she told me how that her family prayed for their needs and wants, but they never even thought about praying for little things like food and drinking water.

Jesus told us to pray, "Give us this day our daily bread." Yet how many people actually live this way? We have been blessed with so much, that we don't ever pray for the very little things, because there is no need to. Upon closer examination we will see that the root cause is because we don't live the way that Jesus commanded us to live.

John 6:27 "Labor not for the meat which perishes, but for that meat which endures unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him has God the Father sealed." If we are honest with ourselves, we Do labor for the meat which perishes. We work mainly to provide for the needs of ourselves and of our family. We work for material, physical things.

Jesus told us to work for the meat which does not perish. He taught a life lived in a very simple manner. A life of faith and prayer, where we are working for the kingdom of God and his righteousness. The work that we do is to gain eternal rewards and not temporal ones. Jesus lived this way and set the example for us to follow. It takes great courage and love to live as Jesus commanded us to live. Yet when this life is over, we shall be so very glad that we did.
