The Second Resurrection

by Jerry Ousley
2/17/2017 / Christian Living

“I’ll get us there,” I bragged.  We had planned a family trip to see a minor league ball game at Indianapolis.  Megan and Jeremy both still lived at home.  Jeremy was a teenager while Megan was at the stage where she was a want-to-be teenager.  In those days you couldn’t just sign on to the internet and pull up Map Quest or some similar program.  However they did make map programs on CD’s.  I had one but I hadn’t updated it for a few years.  Hey, I know there’s a lot of road construction going on but how often do they add a new road?  Not very often.  So I pulled up the stadium and found the address and directions.  We had plenty of time to spare.

When we arrived at the location nothing was there!  Where’d they put the stadium?  I began to panic.  We asked a man on the street and he told us that they had built a new stadium on the south side of the city (we were unfortunately on the north side at that moment) and he told us how to get there.  I should have just gotten back on the Interstate but by his directions we drove south right smack dab in the middle of the city.  Needless to say, by the time we got to the new stadium the game had already started and was in the second or third inning.

It took me awhile to live that one down.  Hey it’s not my fault that I had an old CD and how was I to know that they built a new stadium?  That’s how I justified myself anyway.  The fact was that I knew where to go based on the information I had.  But I hadn’t taken the time to find out the correct information.

I fear that a lot of people are going to be in that same situation only with much more severe consequences when Judgment Day arrives.  You see, they may want to do well.  They might have every intention of being moral and decent people.  They give to charities to help the unfortunate.  They are full of good works but they have the wrong information.  They are going where they think is the right place based on the information they have but they haven’t taken the time to update their information.  The fact is that there are no good works that are good enough to get us into Heaven.  It only comes by believing in the free gift of salvation provided by the blood of Jesus Christ.  His grace applied to our hearts is the right information.

With the right information applied to our lives we will make it to Heaven whether it be at the end of our life or if we are among those who are alive and remaining when our Lord Jesus returns to rapture His people out of this world.  That’s the first resurrection.  At the end of the tribulation period those who have come to Christ during that time, at great cost I might add, will also be raised to complete this first resurrection.  They will reign with Christ for one thousand years after which the devil will be loosed from the Bottomless Pit for a season and rally all those who have not come to the Lord during that thousand year reign.

They will be consumed by God and then the stage is set for the second resurrection.  Here’s what the Bible says about it in Revelation 20:11-15:  “Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away.  And there was found no place for them.  And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and the books were opened.  And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life.  And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books.  The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them.  And they were judged, each one according to his works.  Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire.  This is the second death.  And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.”  Wow!  Man I don’t want any part of that!

Notice that there are three places these dead come from:  The Sea, Death and Hades.  Frankly I’m not sure why the Sea is mentioned but what the Bible is telling us is that all the rest of the dead are brought to stand before the Great White Throne judgment seat of God.  They will be paraded one by one and judged by their works and if their name is not found in the Book of Life they will be cast into the lake of fire along with all the others including the devil.

Folks read it for yourselves in the Bible. Make sure you’ve got the right information.  Then apply the blood of Jesus to your lives and be saved by His grace – and His free gift of salvation.  That’s the insurance you need to be a part of the first resurrection.
