A Special Land

A Special Land.

The mountains and the salt bush country of inland South Australia was created by magic millions of years ago. There are still remnants of the great inland sea to be found today. As I have seen myself.

Land around what people in Australia call Salt Bush country and Mulga feels as though it has been isolated from the rest of the world for centuries. Sometimes you are hundreds of miles from the rest of the world and nearest town. People that live in these areas, live an isolated life; but love every moment of the country life. This inland country is flourishing after rains, as it is a very thirsty land. The following spring the land is alive with the color of native flowers. With many mountain ranges in the area, wildlife and vegetation love the rain.

When families from the sheep stations in the area make the trip from their homes into nearby town, it can be a long hot and dusty trip depending on the weather. Families leave quite early in the morning to make the trip into town, because of the distance. The color of the mountains as they wake up first thing in the morning for the day with the glow of the sun that reflects on the mountains give of a majestic glow. With the odd cotton wool cloud that hangs down over the mountains. As families made the trip into town your imagination kept you company, because it was a long dusty trip at times.

Imagine a mountain waking up for the day with birds flying above, mountain goats and sheep clambering over the mountain looking for a feed. The rabbits put their heads out of the burrow, hesitating about sneaking out in the daylight looking for food, even imagining what would be going on in the caves on the mountains. Picturing different shapes in the clouds and mountains your imagination can run wild.

Watching the sun go down on the way home from a big day in town, the mountains go to sleep for the day. As the sun goes down behind the mountains it is almost like a huge person lying down going to sleep. The kangaroos come out of the shade of the trees looking for a feed, while birds are looking to nest for the night.

This story has been handed down in many different forms over the years, by my Father and Uncle. My father's family grew up in the area over many years; it was a hard life, but a full life. Even though many families lived an isolated life they knew every one like family and when there were community day's families would come from near and far for meeting days. For example Race days; people would arrive in wagons, cars and trucks, the little town would come alive on this day each year. After the races, there would be a dance in the community hall and a Barbeque for all to enjoy.

People knew this town and mountain from a time gone by. They were Aboriginal families, whom used to live, hunt on the wide open plains and surrounding mountains. It was sacred ground to the Aboriginals as they held special Corroborees in the mountains honor. The Aboriginal people carved many carving around the mountains in hidden places hunted eagles and kangaroos. This ancient land holds many secrets that are hidden. Maybe they are still there only the mountain can tell us. The mountains would have watched many historical battles between the Aboriginal tribes, also special ceremonies held by the Aboriginals.

This land has many wonderful sights and has known many wonderful people. The inland of Australia holds many secrets of our animals, to name a few, Wallabies, Emus, Wombats, Eagles, Galahs, Cockatoos, and Crows. The land has offered shelter to little creatures, Lizards, Mice, Snakes, Centipedes and Spiders. Most of all the mountains have offered shelter to many humans as well, sharing the land and mountain.

This is the land that my father and his family grew up in; we have had the privilege to experience this land many times. I also have been lucky enough to share my experiences on the land with my daughters. It is a beautiful country to be shared by all, created by God so many years ago.

I am a beginner looking to pick up where I left of many years ago. I love reading dogs writing and walking and the mid north of South Australia
