Hearing Test

Step out and step up in faith.

“For ‘whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’

How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written:

‘How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace,
Who bring glad tidings of good things!’

But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, ‘Lord, who has believed our report?’ So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God (Romans 10:13-17 NKJV).”

The Apostle Paul seems to be drilling us with questions. He asks, ‘How?’

Follow the progression of his questioning. Can you sense a rise in the pitch of his voice, an increased press for your answer?

How can a lost person believe if they have not ‘heard’ the good news of salvation?

His conclusion: “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God (Romans 10:17 NKJV).”

As a devotional writer to the deaf, the need for hearing takes on a new meaning to me. The deaf readers are unable to hear with their ears; instead, they listen through reading scriptures, devotions and gospel tracts. They listen through seeing; by reading lips or watching sign language.

Hearing the word leads to saving faith.
