Judas

by Jerry Ousley

Bo was our son’s dog.  Jeremy had fondly named him after one of the characters in “The Dukes of Hazard” (if you can remember that show, you know; the one with the “General Lee?”).  Bo was a medium sized dog and he stayed outside all the time.  He was basically a good dog but because he was an outside dog and had a tendency to roam we had to keep him chained up to a doghouse.  It wasn’t much of a life.

The day came when Jeremy wished he had an inside dog that he could play with and spend more time with.  Bo was getting older and since he stayed chained to his doghouse all the time he wasn’t really very much fun.  All we could do was pet him, when we were reminded of him and went outside, feed him and keep his area clean.  We got Jeremy a dachshund puppy.  He fell in love with the little dog right away and, as we expected poor old Bo was even more neglected.  Deb and I felt sorry for Bo but there wasn’t much we could do about it.  How do you make a child pay attention to a dog when he’s got a cute puppy to play with?

As bad as we didn’t want to, it was time for Bo to go.  It made matters worse when we took Casey, the newly dubbed puppy, to visit Bo.  Bo didn’t like him right off the bat.  Maybe he knew that this little traitor was fast becoming his replacement.  When Bo snapped at Casey our decision was made.  Only guess who got to carry it out?  That’s right . . . good ole’ Dad.

I was driving an older car and so as to keep Bo, who was dirty and flea covered, from making a mess our good car, I loaded him up and headed for the pound.  He sat in the passenger seat beside me in the little car.  He almost felt special.  But he wouldn’t have if he had known where we were going.  I felt like I was betraying a good friend.  But the job had to be done and so I took poor ole’ Bo to the dog pound and tried not to look back as I left him whining in a cage.  As I walked back to the car I have to admit that a few tears trickled down my cheek.  It was a hard thing to do.  I knew that most likely no one would want a mixed breed dog like Bo and I also knew most likely what was going to happen to him.  I had betrayed him.

For the next few issues we want to talk about the infamous characters at the crucifixion of Jesus and how we can find ourselves in each of them.  We’ll start with Judas.  He was one of the twelve chosen disciples of Jesus.  Did Jesus make a mistake in picking Judas?  Not hardly.  Being God in the flesh I’m sure that He knew beforehand what Judas was going to do.  But it was a choice that had to be made.

The Bible refers to Judas as “The son of perdition.”  Many have taught that Judas was created, born and destined to betray Jesus.  They have gone so far as to say that he was doomed to his fate and that he never had a chance of making Heaven his home.  However if you’ll examine closely all the scriptures about Judas you might just find yourself feeling a bit sorry for him like I do.  Many may disagree with this but I suppose I’m entitled to my opinion too.  The truth is I kind of feel sorry for Judas.  If what we teach about the love, mercy and grace of God is true then we must believe that Judas, just like every person on Planet Earth had a chance.  Also remember that the Bible tells us that the devil entered him after he left the last supper to turn Jesus in to the Jewish leaders.  He sold Jesus for thirty pieces of silver.  But after it had all been done he returned to the Jewish leaders in attempt to undo his evil.  He tried to give the money back hoping that he could free Jesus.  He couldn’t so he went out and hung himself.

Judas betrayed Jesus.  But before we accuse him we should look at our own lives.  How many times have we betrayed Jesus?  Peter denied Him which was a lot like betraying Him.  But he was forgiven.  Why?  Simply because Peter repented while Judas took his conviction and ended his life.  We are all a bit guilty of betraying Jesus.  Our own sinful lives testify to that.  The question is how are we going to handle our guilt?  Will we repent like Peter and once again become a useful and loyal disciple?  Or will we give up like Judas did?  Our choice . . . our call.
