Herod

by Jerry Ousley

In a NASCAR race one of my favorite parts is the wrecks.  I admit it; the thrill of seeing those cars traveling at extremely high speeds and wrecking is something to see.  They roll over and over, spin around on the tracks and begin flying apart.  It’s amazing to me how that most of the other cars (but not always) seem to maneuver around the chaos.

Of course I don’t want to see anyone get hurt.  Most of the time after one of those wrecks the driver climbs out, stands up, and lets the crowd know that he’s okay.  But sometimes drivers do get hurt.  There have been instances where they have even been killed.  That part of the wreck isn’t thrilling.

I feel guilty for wanting to see those accidents because each one puts the drivers at risk of serious injury or loss of life.  I know I shouldn’t want to see someone in such a risky situation and in truth I’m ashamed that I want it to begin with.

Herod was a thrill seeker.  He was the puppet-king over Israel at the time of Jesus’ crucifixion.  He had heard of Jesus.  He had received reports of the miracles that had taken place in His ministry.  He had secretly entertained the thought of wanting to see a miracle happen with   his own eyes.  But he was too prideful to go out into a crowd of common people.

When Pilate found out that Jesus was from Nazareth he realized that this was Herod’s jurisdiction.  It just happened that Herod was in Jerusalem at that time so Pilate got the bright idea of sending Jesus to Herod.  They marched Him to Herod’s palace.  Herod was glad to see Jesus.  This was his opportunity to see the miracle he had desired.  He wasn’t concerned with the fact that the people wanted Him dead.  He just wanted what he wanted.

That was his demand of Jesus.  He wanted a miracle performed before his very eyes.  But Jesus chose to remain silent.  The Bible doesn’t record one word He spoke to Herod.  The king had Jesus blindfolded and then had his soldiers slap Him around and demanded, “If You are a prophet tell me who hit You?”  It was nothing but fun and sport to Herod.

We have to guard against the same thing today.  We get bored easily.  We want to see something we’ve never seen before.  We want to experience the thrill.  I still believe in miracles.  I believe that God can do anything He wants to do.  Some think that the days of miracles are over but again, God is still God and if He wants to work a miracle I don’t know how our theological beliefs can stop Him.

But there are some who have come to Christ simply because of the miraculous.  That’s all they want to experience.  They want their emotions touched, heightened and soaring by the phenomenal.

God wants us to serve Him because we love Him.  Love isn’t always exciting.  Love sometimes requires us to live in the day to day.  It can be exciting.  It can be a stimulus to our emotions.  But more often than not it is nearly boring.  It is every day.

This then becomes a great indicator of a true Christian.  Are we satisfied with the every day?  Can we be content to simply love God?  If we can, I believe we will begin seeing the miraculous in the everyday experience.  We begin to see that every breath we draw is a miracle.  We begin to understand that each day we live through is a silent miracle taking place.  It may not be as thrilling, but oh what a ride!
