PREOCCUPATION OF A WEAK DISCIPLE
by Olawale Ogunsola
8/12/2017 / Christian Living
“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you shall be witnesses to me in Jerusalem, and in
all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” Acts1:8.
The above are words that proceeded from the mouth of the Lord Jesus Christ to all His disciples. He declared the weapon and the work for each of his follower. So, it is a very clear instruction to be obeyed by serious and strong disciples.
However, as it was, so it is. Every weak disciple, those who have not fully received the Holy Spirit and power, engage themselves in unwholesome activities. Let us briefly examine a few of such, as demonstrated by early disciples.
- Weak disciples prefer to disperse the congregation they ought to provide for. They would rather allow their flock to vend for themselves instead of making provision for them. In Christ’s days on the earth, after He had taught a multitude of people, they became hungry. The best suggestion from His disciples was,
“Send the multitude away, that they may go into surrounding
towns and country and lodge and get provisions, for we are in
a deserted place here.” Luke 9:13.
The view of the Master was different.
He replied, “You give them something to eat.” Verse 13.
Although the disciples could not but the Master fed five thousand men without counting women and children. They also gathered twelve baskets of the leftover.
- Disputing for leadership. Weak disciples contest for leadership positions. Each wants to be the leader. This causes disputes of different magnitude. This, in many cases disorganizes the assignment the Lord had given them. They leave real work undone to concentrate on who “the greatest would be” whereas, the master, Jesus Christ, says,
“for he who is least among you will be great.” Verse 48(d).
Being the least paves the way for greatness but weak disciples do not know this.
- Destruction of real or perceived enemies. Weak disciples are ever overzealous and ready to destroy every enemy, real or imaginary with fire.
For instance, when residents of a village in Samaria did not receive Jesus Christ, James and John said,
“Lord, do you want us to command
fire to come down from heaven and consume them,
just as Elijah did?” Luke 9:54.
The strong master replied,
“You do not know what manner of Spirit you are of.
for the son of man did not come to destroy men’s lives but to
save them.” Verse 55-56.
Are you a disciple of Jesus Christ? Do you feed those who are under your care or do you allow them to provide for themselves? Do you jostle for power in your denomination? Do you love to destroy your antagonist with fire from heaven? They are signs that you are still weak as a disciple. Pray for a change of attitude today. Pray for the Holy Spirit to fill you that power from the Lord will descend on you.
Stay blessed and prepared for the coming of the Lord.
