Just How Do We Keep the Sun Up?

by Jerry Ousley

Aren’t bright sunny days a blessing?  A day when the temperature is just right, not to chilly and not boiling hot, but just right with low humidity, you just want a day like that to never end.  Wouldn’t it be great if we could somehow keep the sun up so that day would never end?  A couple of articles ago we told the story of the little boy who had a disagreement with his friend.  They had each stomped off in anger to their own homes.  But one little boy knew that it wasn’t right and went to his mother who told him about the scripture where we were instructed to not let the sun go down on our wrath.  The little fellow wasn’t ready to apologize just yet and asked his mother, “But how can I keep the sun up?”  He wanted more time.

However, the Bible didn’t say that we weren’t supposed to get angry.  That full verse of scripture is found in Ephesians 4:26 where Paul writes, “BE ANGRY, AND DON’T SIN”:  do not let the sun go down on your wrath.”  We all get angry from time to time.  Even Jesus got angry.  What about the time He came to the temple in Jerusalem and saw those changing currency just outside the great temple?  Travelers couldn’t bring the perfect sacrifices with them and so the practice had been established where the temple kept sacrifices ready for purchase.  Because the Jews had spread into many countries often the currency they carried had to be converted, or changed over.

When we went to Niagara Falls on the Canadian side, we had to convert our money into theirs.  Because at the time the American dollar was worth more than the Canadian dollar we were happy because we got more money than what we had before.  But when it came time to return to the good ole’ US of A and we converted it back it seemed like we were getting ripped off because we didn’t get as much money back!  Anyway, they had set up tables where they converted the foreign currency into the Jewish currency and of course they charged for the conversion as well as a good hefty price for the sacrificial animal.  They were making a tidy profit!  When Jesus saw this He became angry, turned their tables over spilling all that money on the ground and told them, “It is written, ‘MY HOUSE SHALL BE CALLED A HOUSE OF PRAYER,’ but you have made it a ‘DEN OF THIEVES.’” (Matthew 21:13).

Because what He said was true and He was the Son of God He had every right to do what He did.  He even made a whip and drove them out of the court of the temple.  I believe that more of us need to do the same thing with our temples – our bodies.  We need to get angry at sin and drive out those thieves of sin who are robbing us of the things of God!  But the point is that Jesus became angry and His actions were justified.

We on the other hand, need to learn how to handle anger.  The Bible says that we can be angry, but we aren’t supposed to let sin rule our anger.  We find some constructive way to vent it.  Be angry but don’t sin.

Then comes the hard part; don’t let the sun go down on your wrath.  In other words, we need to settle this thing today before night falls.  We don’t have to sleep on it!  We need to find the remedy right now.  Can you imagine what could be accomplished in the Kingdom of God if His children would actually do this?  How often have we become angry at a brother or sister in Christ and we have let it go on and fester for days, weeks, months, even years?  I’ve done it, and I’d bet you’ve done it (or many of you anyways).  But if we settle the matter today just think of the good nights of rest we’d get because we aren’t tossing and turning thinking about what we said, he said, and she said.

Most of us would be glad to do that too, if, like that little boy, we could somehow make the sun stay up just a little longer.  How do we keep the sun up?  We can’t.  But we can lift the Son up – the Son of God!  When we listen to the Holy Spirit inside of us and lift the Son up then making things right suddenly becomes a whole lot easier, and we don’t have to try to figure out how to keep the sun up.
