Satan Will Always Point You Back to the Law

by Michael Edwards
3/03/2018 / Bible Studies

Good things are perverted for evil all the time. A kitchen knife is great for slicing bread, but it can be used for murder too. Likewise, sin gets its power to kill, steal and destroy from the perfect law of God.

The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 1 Cor 15:56 ESV

Satan knows God’s law is holy, perfect and just. He also knows we are born sinners, inheriting our sin nature from Adam. Sinners by nature sin and when we sin, we are subject to God’s punishment for sin, death. Satan knows we are the weak link in the chain and that God cannot let sin go unpunished.

Therefore, to save humanity from its fallen nature and death, Jesus paid for our sins with His death. He then justified us, made us right with God, with his resurrection. He defeated death and made us alive, forgiving our trespasses. Then He disarmed Satan by placing all who believe under grace where sin has no dominion.

And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.  Col 2:13-15 ESV

Under grace, sin has no dominion over us, authority to kill us.

For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace. Rom 6:14

Under grace, sin is not counted against us. Therefore, sin has no power to kill us. Satan is disarmed, and we are safe.

For the law brings wrath, but where there is no law there is no transgression. Rom 4:15

Under grace, sin lies dead.

For apart from the law, sin lies dead. Rom 7:8b ESV

But what if we do not believe God’s word that we are no longer under the law, (including the 10 Commandments) but under grace?

We will live in fear of punishment, live like sin still has the power to kill us. We rearm Satan in our thoughts and mind, empowering satan to kill, steal and destroy.

I was once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin came alive and I died. The very commandment that promised life proved to be death to me. For sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me. Rom 7:9-11 ESV

If you believe you are still under the burden of the law, you have placed the burden of your promised salvation on yourself, when the burden of a promise is always upon the promise maker, in this case God.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life." John 3:16 ESV

The Bible is clear that in Christ there is no condemnation or death.

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. Rom 8:1-2 ESV

The Bible calls the Ten Commandments a ministry of death engraved on stones and a ministry of condemnation. This was the Old Covenant and no longer has any glory because of the ministry of righteous, the New Covenant of grace and truth Jesus shed His blood for. The Old Covenant has been brought to an end so the New Covenant's glory could shine forever.

Now if the ministry of death, carved in letters on stone, came with such glory that the Israelites could not gaze at Moses’ face because of its glory, which was being brought to an end, will not the ministry of the Spirit have even more glory?  For if there was glory in the ministry of condemnation, the ministry of righteousness must far exceed it in glory. Indeed, in this case, what once had glory has come to have no glory at all, because of the glory that surpasses it. For if what was being brought to an end came with glory, much more will what is permanent have glory. 2 Cor 3:7-11 ESV

If we place ourselves back under the law in our thoughts, we empower Satan to condemn us with the law. The law gives sin dominion over our life.

For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace. Rom 6:14 ESV

For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. Rom 10:4 ESV

Now, do you understand why Satan wants you to believe you are still under the law and why he will always point you back to the law?

And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, "This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood. Luke 22:20
