How to Stop Being a Double Minded Christian

by Michael Edwards
3/03/2018 / Bible Studies

Double-mindedness is that squirrel that runs out in front of your car and then notices you coming down the road. He then stops in the middle of the road and looks back and forth, not able to decide which way to go. That is when he gets run over.

Satan’s plan includes to divide and conquer. Double-mindedness is a divided mind.

Double-mindedness is like having a believer yoked with an unbeliever all in one person. One part wants to trust and follow God and the other part doubts and keeps looking back at the world, trusting their flesh and remaining in fear and worry. It reminds me of Lot’s wife who did not heed the warning and looked back at Sodom as they fled the destruction. Turning around to look, she turned into a pillar of salt, frozen and unable to go in either direction.

From Satan’s very first appearance in the Bible, talking with Eve, until today, his main goal is to create doubt in God’s word. He loves it when believers are double-minded, unable to receive anything from God, not even wisdom.

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.  But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. James 1:5-8 ESV

Christians are called to see things by faith. Faith believes God’s word and walks by the spirit, even when it is not visible to, or makes sense to the flesh. If a Christian is still walking in the flesh, discerning things with their natural senses, they are often going to be double minded and unable to understand portions of God’s word, like the natural person in this verse.

The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. 1 Cor 2:14 ESV

If you want to know God’s will for you, it is simple. He wants all believers to stop walking in the flesh and to walk by the spirit.

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. James 4:7-8 ESV

When you submit yourself to God, you believe God's word. Even the parts your natural man cannot discern. Walking in the flesh comes from doubt in God’s word and creates double-mindedness. The desires of the flesh are opposed to the desires of the Spirit.

But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.  For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.  But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Gal 5: 16-18 ESV

Here are some studies to overcome double-mindedness in specific areas where Satan attacks with doubt. They are filled with supporting scriptures. All you need to do is to reject doubt and believe God’s word to stop double-mindedness and Stop satans attacks.

1)    Is there any doubt about your salvation? Get rid of it.

If You Believe You Have Been Saved

Leave the Burden on God

Jesus Did Not Die to See If We Can Qualify

2)    Not sure God see’s you as righteous? He does if your faith is in Jesus.

Only Way to be Righteous,

Literally Righteous in Christ,

Seek First His Righteousness,

I AM THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD IN CHRIST,

3)    Still think you need to keep the law to be saved? Not according to the God.

Jesus is The End of The Law for Believers

A Christian is Dead to the Law, Freed from the Law and Dead to Sin

If Sin Has Dominion in Your Life, You are Living Under the Law, Not Grace

4)    Still think God is counting your sins and you may not make it? He is not.

A Christians Sins are NOT Counted Against Them

Sins Are NOT Counted Under Grace

Can a Christian Lose their Salvation by Sinning? NO

God Forgets Our Sins For His Own Sake

Holy Spirit Does Not Convict a Believer of Their Sins

Believers are Never Called Sinners in the New Testament

Jesus Never Called a Believer a Hypocrite,

Sin Does Not Make a Christian a Hypocrite

Go and Sin No More Does Not Mean God is Going to Get You

5)    Everyone needs these.

I Am a New Creation IN CHRIST

I Am Holy, I Am Sanctified, I Am Perfected

God Said a Believer Can Never be Considered Unholy

Jesus shed His blood to bring the New Covenant of grace and truth.
