Use What You Got

by Steve Countryman

As I get older I realize that stopping being a blessing to others isn’t an option.  What I used in the past to bless others isn’t the only tools in my tool box available to me.  I have to keep reminding myself of this.

One day as I was praying I noticed that I was praying the same prayer over and over again.  I was telling God about how, when opportunities would present themselves, I would bless others.  But since those blessing ways were gone; I was no longer blessing people as I used to.  Basically I was making excuses for my lack of follow through.

Instead of looking for other ways to bless people or going through my tool box for other tools to utilize I just found excuses to use instead.  It became easier to complain about missing opportunities than to look for other ways to bless someone.

2 Kings 4:2-6 2Elisha replied to her, “How can I help you? Tell me, what do you have in your house?”  “Your servant has nothing there at all,” she said, “except a small jar of olive oil.”  3 Elisha said, “Go around and ask all your neighbors for empty jars. Don’t ask for just a few. 4 Then go inside and shut the door behind you and your sons. Pour oil into all the jars, and as each is filled, put it to one side.”

5 She left him and shut the door behind her and her sons. They brought the jars to her and she kept pouring. 6 When all the jars were full, she said to her son, “Bring me another one.”  But he replied, “There is not a jar left.” Then the oil stopped flowing.

It is amazing what just a simple smile can do for someone.  It takes very little effort and cost you nothing from your wallet.  Now add just a little time to say something nice and watch a change come over that person.  You have now made their day.  If you made it a daily habit to find someone to say something nice to how many people could you have a positive affect on?

It’s not you making yourself known to others but making Jesus known to those around you.  Your actions shout more about your creator and who Jesus is through you then you realize.  Give God what little you have and watch what He can do with it!  That’s when people will want to know more about the God you serve.
