DIVINE COMFORT IN TIMES OF DISTRESS

by ONOME OGBAJIBREDE

 Scriptural Reading: Isaiah 61:1-3

‘‘Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.’’ Matthew 5:4 (KJV)

Comfort is a shield in times of distress and a silver bullet of hope when one is cast down. In   I Kings 17:17-24, God used Prophet Elijah to bring comfort to the widow of Zarephath whose son was dead. The man of God prayed to God and God honoured the prayer and brought back the dead boy whose case had been written off. Hear what the woman said in I Kings 17:24 (KJV) ‘‘And the woman said to Elijah, Now by this I know that thou art a man of God, and that the word of the Lord in thy mouth is truth.’’  God gives comfort to His people always.

In our scriptural reading in the book of Isaiah 61:1-3, Jesus was the one speaking of how God had anointed Him to deliver the captives, to open the prison for the prisoners who may be spiritually or physically bound for them to regain their freedom and comfort all those that mourn.

God is a great father that gives consolation and joy to all humankind irrespective of religious affiliation. And He wants all humankind to come to Him through Jesus Christ for ones comfort to be sure. He does not want us to be moody and to behave like people that do not have hope.

Are we passing through moments of bitter tears and no one to turn to? Let us take everything to God in prayers and He will send us comfort speedily without delay. Here is our anchor scripture for application in times of distress when we need comfort from the Almighty God who does not sleep nor slumber. ‘‘I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.’’ John 14:18 (KJV). Jesus will not leave us helpless. He will surely regard our helpless estate. Jesus cares and provides comfort on a daily basis.

Dear Lord Jesus Christ, come into my family and comfort us in our moment of grief and let not your Holy Spirit Divine depart from us. Amen.

Comfort is the bed rest for the afflicted and the wounded at heart.
