Gideon

by Tonja Taylor
1/27/2020 / Poetry

Again the Israelites did evil

In the eyes of the Lord.

Given over to the Midianites

Who stole their grain from the threshing floor.

Because they were reduced to starvation

They had no where else to turn

Except to God, Who would send

A Mighty Man of Valor.

Gideon was threshing wheat one day

When an angel appeared to him

Who reminded him through the voice of God

That He was a deliverer and could restore;

Of how He brought His people from Egypt

Into the Promised Land

And how he would deliver them again using

This Mighty Man of Valor.

The angel said God would grant Gideon strength

To defeat the Midianite men

Despite their turning away and

Worshipping idols, which God deplored.

Gideon said he was the least of his tribe;

But God is always faithful; to His Word He’s true;

He’d go with Gideon and give him strength—

This Mighty Man of Valor.

Gideon then asked the Lord for a sign

To an offering that he’d brought.

Gideon sounded the call to arms

But asked God for another sign.

The fleece convinced him and

The next day, the LORD spoke again

Telling Gideon he had too many men.

Send the fearful back to their land."

Gideon kept 300 men,

A number that pleased the Lord.

They were ready to attack the Midianites,

These Mighty Men of Valor.

Gideon snuck into the enemy camp

And overheard men talking.

A soldier was speaking of a vivid dream,

One that he hadn’t heard before.

He dreamed of bread crushing a tent,

A sign from God to Gideon for victory

Which built up and encouraged

This Mighty Man of Valor.

When Gideon heard the dream, he thanked God

Returned back to camp shouting, “GET UP!!!

The Lord has given you victory today—

He has provided a chance and an open door!”

He then divided three hundred men

Into groups of three; gave each man a horn,

A clay jar, and a torch, which they would use

To shout and yell and raise a great noise.

A sword for the Lord and for Gideon!”

This was their mighty battle cry as they

Broke their jars and blew their horns,

These Mighty Men of Valor.

It was chaos and confusion, running to and fro.

The Midianites didn’t know what hit them.

They had no idea who was attacking

And were terrorized every way.

The Midianites defeated themselves

For the Lord was abiding with His troops.

Gideon became a hero to the Israelites,

Tbis Mighty Man of Valor.
