All-sufficient One

by Faith Noles
2/17/2020 / Devotionals

I just want to thank You Lord, Thank You for who You are: The Rock that I lean on, my bright and Morning Star, Holy One with all power, my strong and mighty tower, El Shaddai.

Fountain of life, ever flowing well, God of love, Oh Your mercy never fails. Keeper of the soul, You make the broken whole, El Shaddai.

You are the air I breathe, Giver of Life, Holy One I believe, Jesus my light. To You my hands I raise, hands that You made. I lift my voice in praise, the voice that You gave.

Oh, You’re the air I breathe, my every heartbeat. Lord, You’re all I need, El Shaddai.

Dr. Eli Lizorkin-Eyzemberg at the Israel Institute of Biblical Studies, says the name El Shaddai means “breast” and should be translated as “God All-sufficient”.

As a nurse and a mother, this translation of El Shaddai is intriguing and comforting. The baby breastfeeding in his mother’s arms signifies comfort, intimacy, protection and complete nourishment. Breast milk is vital for the infant’s optimal growth and development.  Studies have shown that the composition of a mother’s breast milk changes in relation to the gestational age of her baby. The mother’s breast milk of premature babies has an increased amount of fat and antibodies. Studies show that premature babies who are breast fed by their mother increase weight faster and have a lower risk of disease compared to babies who are formula fed.

Just as the mother’s milk is exactly what her baby needs, so also our Heavenly Father provides our every need.

“Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness, And for His wonderful works to the children of men! For He satisfies the longing soul, And fills the hungry soul with goodness.” (Psalm 107:8-9, NKJV)

Father, thank You for Your loving grace and provision. I ask that You feed the hungry souls; comfort the brokenhearted; deliver the oppressed and fill every need in Jesus name.
