Preparations

by PamFord Davis

Have you made your funeral arrangements? Most funeral homes offer pre-paid plans. Maybe, like some, you have everything planned. I have picked out scripture and a few of my favorite hymns.

One of my best friends died two years ago. Her family grieved. Fortunately, they had few decisions to make. She had taken care of the most important details. King David made preparations for the temple before his passing.

“David said, ‘My son Solomon is young and inexperienced, and the house that is to be built for the Lord shall be exceedingly magnificent, famous and glorious throughout all lands. Therefore now I will make preparation for it.’ So David made ample preparations before his death.

Then he called for his son Solomon, and charged him to build a house for the Lord God of Israel (1 Chronicles 22:5-6 NASB).”

Jesus did not make burial plans. Joseph of Arimathea made the final arrangements.

“When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus. This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him. And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,  and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock; and he rolled a large stone against the entrance of the tomb and went away (Matthew 27:57-60 NASB).”

Nicodemus helped too.

“Nicodemus, who had first come to Him by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds weight. So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen wrappings with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews (John 19:39-40 NASB).”
