God's Favorite Color

by Tonja Taylor
6/14/2020 / Short Stories

“I think God’s favorite animal is a horse," Pearl said.

Xiomara looked curious. “But how do you know?”

Pearl looked excited. “Because He is coming back on one--the most splendid white horse of all! It must be a Lipizzan or something! And I want to ride on one, like Jesus will!”

Hmm," said Xiomara. "But how do you know? Just because you like horses doesn't mean He's coming back on one. And when is He coming back?"

Pearl picked up her Bible. "Xi, Jesus always means what He says, and He says He is coming back soon!" She opened it to Revelation and flipped pages. "It's in here somewhere...Queen Mother showed me. Hmm...Anyway, I think it's chapter 20 something. I’ll have to ask her….But He is coming back to take us to Heaven and is bringing His rewards for us, for sure!”

“Sure,” said Xiomara.

She doesn’t seem too sure, thought Pearl. Help me to help her, LORD.

“Is that all you can say?” Pearl asked?

Xiomara was quiet for a few seconds. “I don’t know what else to say….How about awesome?”

“No, Xi…..I can only use that word for God!”

“Really?” said Xi. “But lots of things are awesome.”

“Not to me,” Pearl said. “If you look up the word and what it really means, like Queen Mother had me do one day, you’ll see that really only Jesus is awesome! And anyway, I also know God’s favorite color is blue!”

Blue?” said Xi. “Why would you think that?”

Yeah,” Pearl said, “Blue’s gotta be His favorite, cause He started with blue when He decorated the temple, and even for the first color in the clothes the priests wore. And besides, the whole sky is blue!”

Xi smiled: “Blue is your favorite, Princess! But you may be right.”

Pearl smiled back. “Yes, I am right! It’s in the Bible—Exodus!”

“Exodus,” said Xi. “That sounds like a rock group or something!”

“No, Xi, it’s the second book of the Bible, where God gave the Ten Commandments. Have you heard of the Ten Commandments?”

Xi looked thoughtful. “I’m not sure. Is that God’s rules? Kind of like at school, when the teacher has us go over her rules from day one?”

“Sort of,” said Pearl. “Anyway, let’s look. Get your Bible and I’ll show you.”

Xi looked uncomfortable. “Uh, I’m not sure where it is.”

“Oh yeah,” Pearl said,“no problem. We have lots around here and you can use one till you find yours.” She fiipped pages backwards, almost to the front of her Bible. “I think it’s chapter 25...no, it’s chapter 26, then 27 and 28. Let me read you a little bit, okay?”

“Sure,” said Xi, but she did not sound excited.

But I am excited, thought Pearl. I get to read the Word to Xi! Help me do it right, LORD!

Okay,” Pearl said, “This is neat--where He tells Moses how to do the temple and always starts with blue. Even later, about the clothes for the priests, He starts with blue!” Here it is, in chapter 26, the first few verses: “Make the tabernaclethat’s the temple--with ten curtains of finely twisted linen and blueSee? Blue!Pearl said, and continued, “purple and scarlet yarn, with cherubim woven into them by a skilled worker--”

Cherubim?” said Xiomara. “What is that?”

“Angels,” said Pearl. “Let me read a little more: "All the curtains are to be the same size—twenty-eight cubits long and four cubits wide. Join five of the curtains together, and do the same with the other five. Make loops of blue—See, more blue!---material along the edge of the end curtain in one set, and do the same with the end curtain in the other set.”

"See there?" Pearl said.

“Wow,” Xi said. “That is really detailed!

Yes, God cares about details. And He knows exactly what He wants! Anyway, can you hear how He mentions blue first? See, I’m right!”

“Hmm,” Xi said. “I suppose so. But let’s see if you’re right about this!” She threw a pillow playfully at Pearl.

“Mpfh!” Pearl squeaked, as the pillow lightly hit her chest. She threw it back at Xi’s head.

Xi laughed. “You know, don’t you, that every human sees things differently, and it’s all in the perception! Don’t you know it’s just the way the light hits the retina or whatever that thingie in your eye is called.”

“Well, Ms. Science, are you trying to disagree with the Princess?” ZePearl used her best Royal Voice, and giggled.

Not at all, Your Highness," Xi said.  "I was just helping you make sure of what you believe.” She threw the pillow back.

I know Whom I believe!” Pearl said, and threw it at Xi again, then threw a smaller pillow too. “His name is Jesus—my Big Brother!”

Xi laughed and threw the pillow back. “Yeah, and you even know how to use ‘whom’ the fancy way! Congrats!”

They threw pillows back and forth several times, and Queen Mother came in to see what all the commotion was about. “What are my sweet girls doing?” she asked.

“Sorry, Mrs. Williams. We were just talking about God's favorite things while we have a pillow fight," said Xi.

Pearl's mother smiled. “I see. Well, I’m sure that you both are God's favorites! He God loves it when you talk good about Him no matter what you’re doing. Just be easy on each other. I love both of you!” she said, and hugged them.

“Love you, Mrs. Williams,” Xi said. “Your mom is so kind,” she told Pearl.

“You’re right about that!” said Pearl. “God has given me the best mother!”

“Thank you, Pearl,” said her mother. “Did you lovelies also know that, in Malachi 3, the LORD says He is putting the words of all us who honor Him into a special book? So when you brag on Him and what He’s done, His angel writes down your words in that special Book!”

“Wow!” said Pearl.

“Really? Awesome!” said Xi.

“Now that’s a good use for ‘awesome’ Xi!” Pearl said. “Way to go!”

“Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done. --Revelation 22:12, NIV
