Unexpected Company

by PamFord Davis
7/27/2020 / Devotionals

Oh no, I wasn’t expecting company! Please excuse the mess.

I remember an old Father Knows Best episode; Margaret (always prim & proper) was caught off guard. She was in the midst of housekeeping and shabbily dressed for the work day. Embarrassed, she welcomed her unexpected company.

Some have mastered hospitality; these men and women make all visitors feel welcome. They push aside clutter; offer the guest a comfortable seat and put on a fresh pot of coffee. It’s an election year; hopeful candidates might arrive when least expected. Have you put out the welcome mat?

No politician, entertainer or sports celebrity could match the excitement caused by the surprised arrival of Elijah and Moses. Peter was unprepared.

“Six days later, Jesus took with Him Peter and James and John, and brought them up on a high mountain by themselves. And He was transfigured before them; and His garments became radiant and exceedingly white, as no launderer on earth can whiten them. Elijah appeared to them along with Moses; and they were talking with Jesus. Peter said to Jesus, ‘Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three tabernacles, one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.’ For he did not know what to answer; for they became terrified (Mark 9:2-6 NASB).”

Elijah and Moses came to talk with Jesus, Son of God.

They were unexpected special guests.

We never know who might knock on our door.

“Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it (Hebrews 13:2 NASB).”
