All Hail the Power of Jesusâ Name!

Inconceivable!” (Vizzini, The Princess Bride).

For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities — all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together” (Colossians 1:16–17).

Our former pastor would joke about how some of his lady congregants would invite him over for a memorable dinner to enjoy their special culinary creation. When he arrived in wide-eyed anticipation, he was disappointed to discover that the dinner, as delightful as it was, was merely a mixture of preexisting materials. It was not a “creation” in the biblical sense — it was a “compilation.”

The Colossian believers were in danger of diluting the mystery of Christ, which meant denying his deity and power. They no doubt accepted the fact that God created the heavens and the earth and all things therein (Genesis 1), but they may have also been influenced by “wiser” cultists who taught that Christ himself was a created being, probably an angel.

One sure way to prove that Christ is part of the Trinity — God Himself — is to show that he could do what only God can do: create everything ex nihilo, a scholarly term for “out of nothing.” As John begins his gospel, he makes sure that anyone familiar with the creation story in Genesis makes the connection between the Word (Christ) and God: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made” (John 1:1–3). The author of Hebrews, wanting to remind the Jews of the superiority of Christ over rituals, angels, prophets, priests, and kings, begins with, “but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power” (Hebrews 1:2–3).

One of the futile religious exercises I tried before becoming a Christian was a form of Hindu meditation. The point was to clear your mind of all thoughts by thinking of nothing. Of course, thinking of nothing means you are having thoughts anyway, thoughts of nothing. Can you conceive of “nothing”? As in, before God created everything, there was nothing — not even time? Try it, then get out the aspirin.

Next, try to think about God’s power. All power comes from its creator. Have you ever gotten an electrical shock? I used to work in a factory where there was a constant possibility of a 10,000-volt zap — and I was one of the blessed ones! Lightning is essentially the same, only exceedingly more powerful, and it does not originate in a power plant. Think of the power of an atomic bomb. Multiply that by a number you can’t comprehend, and that’s the power of the sun. Multiply one sun by that same number, and that’s the number of stars in the known universe, many more powerful than the sun. God not only created those fireballs by His powerful word — He keeps them running without the need of a USB charger. As one bible scholar has said, if one errant molecule were to get out of His control, the entire universe would collapse.

This is the Jesus Christ who asks you to trust him. If he can govern angels, nations, stars, weather, and everything else, do you believe he can handle your problems?
