For His Friends

by PamFord Davis

Companions are not always trustworthy.

Friends can be fickle.

King David shared his hurt.

“For it is not an enemy who reproaches me;
Then I could bear it.
Nor is it one who hates me who has exalted himself against me;
Then I could hide from him.
But it was you, a man my equal,
My companion and my acquaintance.
We took sweet counsel together,
And walked to the house of God in the throng (Psalm 55:12-14 NKJV).”

Judas turned on Jesus. He would betray the Son of Man.

“Then Satan entered Judas, surnamed Iscariot, who was numbered among the twelve. So he went his way and conferred with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray Him to them. And they were glad, and agreed to give him money. So he promised and sought opportunity to betray Him to them in the absence of the multitude (Luke 22:3-6 NKJV).”

He found his opportunity.

“And while He was still speaking, behold, a multitude; and he who was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them and drew near to Jesus to kiss Him.  But Jesus said to him, ‘Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss (Luke 22:47-48 NKJV)?”

Judas betrayed Him with a kiss; Peter denied Him before men.

“Immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had said to him, ‘Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.’ So Peter went out and wept bitterly (Luke 22:60b-62 NKJV).”

Judas betrayed Jesus; Peter denied Him. Yet, Christ Jesus sacrificed His life for friends.

“Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends (John 15:13 NKJV).”
