Self Discipline

I remember gym class; I don’t remember it fondly.

I’ve never been athletic or very interested in sports. Exercise in elementary school was okay but I dreaded physical education classes in junior and senior high school. New York State believed it was part of a student’s full rounded education. Unwillingly, I went to the locker room to change into my gym uniform and then into the gymnasium. It was not enjoyable. Yet, I did exercise.

Decades later, I began to see the need to stay physically fit. At one time, I exercised faithfully for 1 hour a day; 6 days a week. I did 30 minutes of stretching exercises along with a Christian television program; followed by 30 minutes of aerobic exercise. My diet was low fat and I had great blood readings. A nurse was amazed by my HDL levels. I thought I’d always exercise. That has not been the case; it’s difficult to keep up the strenuous habit.

This year, I’ve been starting most mornings early with exercise. I’ve done quite well but at 71 my routine is not rigorous. It requires self discipline.

Am I spiritually fit?

“On the other hand, discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness; for bodily discipline is only of little profit, but godliness is profitable for all things, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come (1 Timothy 4:7b-8 NASB).”
