You Can't Have a Golliwog Any More.

 They say one cannot have a golliwog.

Not politically correct and racially discriminating.

I had a golliwog as a child.

I read about Epaminondas the little black boy,

the Uncle Remus stories and Jungle Doctor.

How did they affect me?

I fell completely in love with Epaminondas, my golliwog, and Uncle Remus.

I fell utterly under the spell of a great big Africa

With hot skies, zebra and giraffes, elephants and big cats,

Hippos and the wonderful monkeys.

What is not to love?

Bring back the golliwog,

The music which has us all under its spell,

The energy, simplicity and laughter.

How can you not admire those who gave us Jazz –

That real music that dances in your soul

And laughs at limitation.

How can we not hunger for a little of that

Leaping, heartfelt jumping for joyousness

That hibernates under beautiful, black skin

And thinks the season is still winter.

Come out in beauty.

Shine forth your reverberating energy

Upon a world that cries out to breathe you in

And take you to its heart.

Grandmother, teacher, bushlover, horse-lover, gardener, poet , stirrer and passionate person, especially about Jesus.
