Counselor's Corner: How Type A's Can Still Keep a Routine When Storms of Life Hit

by stephanie reck
8/31/2021 / Christian Living

I could be described as a pretty routine and structured person. I get up and go to bed at the same time every day, I exercise first thing in the morning, and I spend time with God daily. I have other routines that I try and keep most days so that I get accomplished what I would like to. Without routines, most people have trouble completing tasks and staying focused. including me.

There are those times in life that cause disruption to our routines and are unavoidable. Storms of life can happen to anyone and at any time. These "storms" can be a physical storm like the hurricane I recently experienced or relational, financial, or emotional storms such as dealing with a family crisis. When the storms of life hit, it can be tempting to throw in the towel and do nothing. There is a time to pull back if needed, but there is also a time that getting back on your routine will help stabilize you as are adjusting to any minor or major setbacks in life.

Setbacks in life can make you feel disoriented, especially those with Type A personalities. Type A's thrive on routine, structure, and organization, unlike Type B's who can manage changes in routine more readily as they are usually free-flowing. When the storms of life hit there are some things that you can do to help you get back on your routine. Major storms of life such as death and divorce may need more time to get back on routine, but even during these times, it will still be important to keep somewhat of your normal routine. You may need to cut back and prioritize your basic needs during harder seasons of life.

Listed below are a few tips that can help Type A's and Type B's to keep a routine when the storms of life hit:

Adjust your schedule. It is unrealistic to try and maintain your exact routine when you are hit with a storm. You may need to make small or significant changes in your routine, depending on how big and long the storm is.

Ask God for help. You cannot expect to go at your own strength when life hits hard. Before you start your day, seek God's wisdom and ask God to increase and bless what you do.

Write out all the things that you normally do and decide what is feasible for you to do that day. Do what you can, and don't get discouraged that you may not be able to keep the exact routine when a storm hits.

Incorporate more breaks and rest time in your routine, which may mean you may have to cut back on non-essential things. Some storms of life can be draining, physically, mentally, and spiritually. The most important thing to remember when you are going through a storm of life is that you can still be productive and keep a modified routine.

Storms of life don't last, so if you keep a modified routine during this time it will be easier to bounce back to your full routine when the storms pass. Life happens and we may need to be more flexible when it does, and realize that if we are already disciplined in routine we will get right back on track when the time comes.
